Is Your Dog Afraid of Storms?
June 16, 2008
Storm season is upon us. We’ve had some humdingers here in Ohio lately. So, what do you do with a dog who is afraid of thunderstorms? With their sensitive hearing and awareness of changes in the atmospheric pressure, dogs may have good reason to be afraid.
Can Your Dog Sing?
June 15, 2008
Zoe, a nine-year old spaniel from Lothians, Edinburgh, may be more valuable than most dogs. She recently won her guardian 1000 pounds (nearly $2000 in American money) with her outstanding singing ability.
Adoption Fair
June 14, 2008
My company picnic was at the Cleveland Zoo today. (And, just in case you were wondering, it is mating season for those huge tortoises, and they are VERY noisy when they do it!)Â
When we got to the zoo, the whole area from the parking lot to the gates was filled with tents and tables and DOGS. It was a really cool adoption fair, featuring animals from local shelters and rescue groups. Click below to see my pictures.
He’s no dummy!

Living right next to the main highway through town, my friend made quite a spectacle of herself whenever she mowed the lawn. The reason people were so interested was that she had a rather large shadow!
Don’t worry – he won’t bite!
June 13, 2008
OK, I admit it, I have a vested interest in this one.  I work at a midwestern power company during the day and blog by night.Â
Our single biggest source of injury is dog bites. And of course, all the owners tell us, “don’t worry – he won’t bite!” Have you ever said that about your dog? Are you sure he won’t?Â
It’s not only the big, scary dogs that bite. Our employees have often been bitten by little ankle-biters, as well.
Up, Up, and Away!

Toto – I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore! From the Chicago Sun Times: a 130-pound Rottweiler named Chase was swept off his feet by a tornado that touched down in suburban Richtor Park on Saturday. The storm ripped roofs off buildings, crushed garages, and split trees, in addition to carrying Chase about a block away from his home.
Life with Jake
June 12, 2008
Last year, my friend Wendy planted a small guarden in her back yard – just a few tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, and green beans. She was amazed at how many cucumbers and squash were growing, but after each vegetable got to just about the point where she was ready to pick them, they would disappear!
She thought there must be a thief in the neighborhood, so she began keeping an eye on the garden. Soon she found out who it was. You guessed it – her lab puppy Jake!Â
Glad to see even dogs worry about good nutrition!
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
London Dog Fights
June 11, 2008
I generally think of the British as a fairly cultural bunch, but apparently, they have trouble with dog fighting across the pond, just as we do here in North America.
Sad News
June 10, 2008
My friend breeds doxies and had a tragedy this weekend.
Gretta went into labor, bringing out one very large puppy, but then she struggled and struggled to bring out the next one. She took good care of the one puppy, but eventually stopped even trying to birth the others. [Read more]
Undercover, but not a cop…
June 9, 2008
I never knew sanitation workers could go undercover…only in New York City.
Apparently, The Big Apple is serious about its pooper scooper law. Theo Otibu, a former Ghana police officer and UN monitor in Bosnia, is now an undercover sanitation worker in Brooklyn – watching for people who don’t clean up after their dogs. Apparently, the sanitation department employs 15 people to enforce the pooper scooper law across the five boroughs… [Read more]
