$400,000 for the Humane Society in Canton!

How’s this for a feel-good story?  Seems there was a woman in Canton (my hometown) who, although no one ever knew it, was quite wealthy when she died.  She had lived frugally, primarily in residence hotels, for most of her adult life and had never owned a pet.  However, when she died, she bequeathed half of her substantial investment holdings to the Stark County Humane Society!  Her friends are shocked, and her family is contesting the will, but the agency’s board is dancing in the streets!

See the whole story here, and take a look at your own estate planning.  Do you have anything you could donate to animal care charities when you go?  Check out our dog den for an article on pet-related charities.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Wednesday’s Wild, Wacky World of Dog News

I’ve found quite a few news items of interest this week.

First up:  Dog Stuck in Recliner at Assisted Living Center.  Firefighters in Naperville, Illinois responded to an emergency call from the Sunrise of Naperville Assisted Living Center, arriving to find 5-year old Ebonyser stuck inside a recliner after the electrical controls stopped working.  The terrier lives with 87-year old Ken Maris, who says Ebonyser has some nerve damage and is on pain killers, but is recovering well.  Firefighters had to saw the chair apart to get the dog out, while a nurse’s aid hung onto the chair to relieve the pressure on the dog.

Saturday Survey: Dog Crate or Dog Cage

We’ve often talked about crate training on doggies.com, but I know some people use cages instead. What’s the difference? It’s not in the construction at all, but rather in the function.

A crate is typically used to give your dog a place to get away from it all, his own personal den. It can also be a useful training tool when you are housebreaking. A cage, on the other hand, is typically used to keep your dog out of the way or to punish the dog for bad behavior. So, which is it at your house?

Miller High Life Dog Show

Just saw the new Miller High Life commercial.  You know how he goes into various sports arenas and takes back their beer because they aren’t worthy?  In this one, he goes inside an arena and sees it has been converted for use as a dog show.  He just can’t believe it.  Then, at the end he says, “Is that a portrait of a dog?”  It doesn’t translate well for me to tell you about it, but I can’t find it on YouTube yet.  It is absolutely hysterical, so watch for it.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
