Tuesday’s Top Ten: Common Signs of Canine Cancer

December 9, 2008

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the following are the most common signs of cancer in a dog. Although any one of these alone may not mean that cancer is present, taken together, they can indicate a pretty convincing diagnosis.

  • First is an abnormal swelling that won’t go away or that continues to grow.
  • The second symptom is a sore that won’t heal, which could indicate a skin cancer.
  • Third is weight loss for which you have no alternative explanation
  • Fourth is loss of appetite.
  • The fifth symptom to be on the lookout for is bleeding or discharge from any body opening.
  • Sixth is an offensive odor.
  • Seventh is difficulty eating or swallowing.
  • The eighth symptom to watch for revolves around exercise. A dog who is normally very active but has recently turned into a couch potato may have a problem.
  • Ninth, and somewhat related to the eighth, is lameness or stiffness.
  • Tenth, and last, is if the dog has trouble with any of his normal biologic functions such as breathing or going to the bathroom.

Do you trust your dog groomer?

December 4, 2008

Have you seen the news out of Knoxville, TN, about a groomer who has had several dogs die in his care?  Most recently, Moxie, a five-year old Beagle, died after being bathed at Happy Tails Grooming.   While the groomer says the dog had a seizure, an autopsy showed heat exhaustion as well as broken ribs and a punctured liver.

Dog Stuck in Drainpipe

December 3, 2008

NBC’s Columbus affiliate Channel 4 is reporting tonight on Zeke, a dog stuck in a drainpipe since last Saturday.  The dog apparently chased a critter into the pipe and got stuck.  This afternoon, a crew from Dreier and Maller, a Reynoldsburg sewage company, ran a cable and robotic camera down the pipe.  The dog has been sighted and is still alive, but has not yet been rescued.  Raw footage from the robotic camera can be seen here

Marmaduke on Animal Planet

December 3, 2008

Endulge me for one small family-related plug.  Do you watch Dogs 101 on Animal Planet?  My mom’s cousin is married to Brad Anderson, the cartoonist who draws Marmaduke.  They interviewed him for their segment on Great Danes.  Although his family has had Great Danes, he and his wife currently have a toy breed, so it was kind of funny to see him with these huge dogs.  Anyways, if you haven’t seen it, I’m not sure about the repeat schedule, but we sure are proud of him!

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!
