Free at last, free at last! The dog we posted about yesterday has been freed. Turns out there was another dog in a similar predicament in Ohio. From the Associated Press:

Do you trust your dog groomer?
Have you seen the news out of Knoxville, TN, about a groomer who has had several dogs die in his care? Most recently, Moxie, a five-year old Beagle, died after being bathed at Happy Tails Grooming. While the groomer says the dog had a seizure, an autopsy showed heat exhaustion as well as broken ribs and a punctured liver.
Dog Stuck in Drainpipe
NBC’s Columbus affiliate Channel 4 is reporting tonight on Zeke, a dog stuck in a drainpipe since last Saturday. The dog apparently chased a critter into the pipe and got stuck. This afternoon, a crew from Dreier and Maller, a Reynoldsburg sewage company, ran a cable and robotic camera down the pipe. The dog has been sighted and is still alive, but has not yet been rescued. Raw footage from the robotic camera can be seen here.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
Marmaduke on Animal Planet
Endulge me for one small family-related plug. Do you watch Dogs 101 on Animal Planet? My mom’s cousin is married to Brad Anderson, the cartoonist who draws Marmaduke. They interviewed him for their segment on Great Danes. Although his family has had Great Danes, he and his wife currently have a toy breed, so it was kind of funny to see him with these huge dogs. Anyways, if you haven’t seen it, I’m not sure about the repeat schedule, but we sure are proud of him!
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

MARS Petfood Recall
Franklin, Tennessee (November 25, 2008) —Today, Mars Petcare US announced an extension of a previously announced voluntary recall of dry cat and dog food products manufactured at its Allentown, Pennsylvania facility with “Best By” dates between August 11, 2009 – October 3, 2009. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella. This voluntary recall affects product sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club, ShopRite Supermarkets, and Wal-mart locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia.
Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
This action is an extension of the voluntary recall issued on October 27, 2008 of all sizes of SPECIAL KITTY® Gourmet Blend dry cat food produced at the Allentown facility on August 11, 2008. Follow-up to previous dog stories
To follow up on a couple of previous posts:
1. Regarding ballot question 3 in Massachusetts: greyhound racing in the state will be phased out by 2010. 56% of the state’s voters agreed that keeping dogs in such close quarters and subjecting them to racing injuries purely for human enjoyment was not a good thing. Although arguments were made that passage of the ban would lead to job loss, voters were smart enough to see that dog racing is a dying industry and should be phased out quickly.
2. Regarding Ratchet, the dog who was having trouble getting home after being adopted by a soldier in Iraq: after three flights stretching over two days, Ratchet landed in Washington, beating her guardian to US soil. Specialist Gwen Beberg, who was due to return home to Minnesota in November, adopted Ratchet in May after she saved him from a burning pile of rubbish in Baghdad. The dog spent two days in a kennel before flying to Minneapolis to stay with Specialist Beberg’s parents until she gets home. I haven’t found any newsclips saying the good Specialist is home yet – I’ll let you know.
3. Gus, winner of the 20th Annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, has died of skin cancer. He was nine years old.
4. Finally, don’t forget to vote in our survey to name the Obama’s dog here.
Note to men: Don’t pee on your girlfriend’s dog
From the weird, wacky world of dog news:
A man in Manitowoc, Wisconsin was arrested last month for urinating on his roommate’s dog after she refused to have sex with him.
The 35-year old man was drunk when he asked his roommate to have sex with him. She refused, so he went to the basement and peed on both the dog and the floor. (I hate when that happens!)
He was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct related to domestic violence.
Stay classy, dude!
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
