The myth goes that Buddha whilst in meditation, fell asleep, with a dog beside him, of a breed later named,Lhasa Apso, beside him. The sleeping Buddha was about to be robbed, but the dog turned into a lion and drove off the attackers. It’s said that the Apso was bred in the seventh century by lamas in the temples of Tibet, to look like a lion, which indeed they do. According to legend, they are the incarnation of former lamas who did not reach Nirvana.
Today the Lhasa Apso is the national dog of Tibet – and thus the connection to honoured war dogs of the pictured memorial above.
