CNN points out that dogs in the military are classified as “equipment”, and as such, they are expendable when they retire overseas. If anyone (such as the dog’s handler) wants to adopt the dog, that person has to pay the thousands of dollars it often takes to fly the dog home.
Representative Walter Jones (R – NC) has introduced a bill that would assure these hard-working dogs always get flown home after their tours have ended and would set up a privately-funded network to provide lifetime care for the dogs.
The Facebook page set up in support of this bill tells who you should contact to help get the bill passed into law, by state. Contact your Congresspeople, referencing bill H.R. 4103.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
