Since its founding in 1928, National Dog Week has been celebrated during the last full week of September. When dog advocate Captain Will Judy came back from World War I, he wanted to find a way to educate people as to how to responsibly have a dog in their lives.
Captain Judy was the founder of Dog World Magazine, which published its first issue in 1916. After the war, he founded an entire publishing empire dedicated to dogs. “The world likes dogs because dogs are nearest to moral perfection of all living things,” he said.
To celebrate this week, you’re invited to post your dog’s photo on the National Dog Week Facebook page.
Other suggested ways to celebrate include giving your dog an extra five minutes of play time each day this week, taking him or her to the vet for a check-up, and hosting a party for the dogs on your block or in your building.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
