Sorry – no Friday Funny this week – this is more important.

From the Facebook page of the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando:

We are heartbroken to share that Pet Alliance’s Orlando location was damaged by a devastating fire last night. We are very sad to report that we lost 23 cats to the fire, but firefighters and staff were able to save ALL of the dogs.
All of the saved animals will be transported to the Sanford location for assessment and care. We appreciate the community’s outpouring of support. If you wish to make a donation you can do so on our website. We will let the community know what other help we need as we move forward.

UPDATE: After last night’s devastating fire at our Orlando location, we were able to save a total of 45 cats and 26 dogs. This includes four additional cats that shelter staff discovered this afternoon. We are heartbroken to report that we lost 13 cats and there are 4 still missing. Staff will be setting up traps at the location in the hopes of locating the missing 4. Continue reading Shelter Fire in Orlando

From the American Humane blog: National Service Dog Month, a time devoted to raising awareness and showing appreciation for the extraordinary work service dogs do every day for the people in their care. Join us in celebrating and honoring these special heroes who dedicate their lives to help their human companions.

Service dogs are specially trained to perform specific tasks for people with disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act. They can be trained to retrieve objects, assist with balance, give seizure or diabetic alerts, or assist those with psychiatric disabilities. They also serve our nation’s wounded warriors suffering from conditions including Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury. Service dogs provide companionship while inspiring confidence and they live to serve and assist their handlers. With the help of a service dog, humans can better manage disabilities and live fuller lives. Continue reading September is National Service Dog Month

From Doylestown (Wayne County, Ohio) Police Department:

Jet is our retired K9. She is a black German Shepherd and lives with her handler in the State St./Romig Rd. area. She managed to escape from her crate and out a partially open window/screen sometime Sunday evening. She is friendly, but by this time she is probably scared. Please share this post with anyone who may live, work, or travel in the State St./Romig Rd. area. If seen or located please do not attempt to capture, contact our dispatch at 330.658.2771, and ask to be connected to the officer on duty. A reward is being offered.

Please keep your eye out if you’re in the area.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Shelter Sunday: Jasper / Safe Haven Rescue Kennel / Yerington, NV

Jasper NV

Meet Jasper! This handsome boy wants to be an only child for some lucky family. Here’s what his rescuers have to say about him:

Jasper is a young 1 yr old husky mix. Active family home that will have him indoors and love on him. However, no small children as he is nippy and too rambunctious . Walks well on leash. Pulls somewhat. Would be good as an only dog. But very friendly with people. Sweet and rather attentive for a husky. Continue reading Shelter Sunday: Jasper / Safe Haven Rescue Kennel / Yerington, NV
