Although today the race could be held in Texas, The Iditarod will, as always, be held in Alaska, starting on March 7th. However, they have made some significant changes due to COVID-19. Here’s the scoop:

The Iditarod Trail Committee confirmed that both the restart and the finish of the Last Great Race on Earth will take place at Deshka Landing. The decision was mutually made by the Iditarod and the Willow Area Community Organization due to concern for COVID-19 risk mitigation at the Willow Area Community Center, which is also undergoing construction projects on facilities regularly utilized by the Iditarod.

Deshka Landing, located approximately 7.5 road miles from Willow Lake, serves as a year-round access point to the Lower Susitna Drainage consisting of the Susitna River, Deshka River, Yentna River, Alexander Creek and all tributaries. This change for the 2021 race, along with the Iditarod Golden Trail Loop race route, further allows race organizers to safely execute and continue to protect the communities along the trail, the mushers, volunteers and Iditarod personnel. I’m watching The Weather Channel, waiting for the snow to reach us here in Canton, Ohio, and realizing that there is snow deep into the south, where they are not quite as used to it as we are. So, a few cold weather tips for you and your dog:

1. Bring your dog inside if at all possible.

2. If the dog must stay outside, provide straw or blankets and a shelter where s/he can get out of the wind. Continue reading Top Ten Cold Weather Tips

Virtual Night With The Museum of the Dog

MOD gala

From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The AKC Museum of the Dog is excited to announce “Virtual Night with the Museum,” a livestream virtual gala honoring the Museum’s longtime friend, supporter and board member Ronald H. Menaker on Friday, February 12 between 8pm -9pm.

For almost three decades, the Theatre Benefit for the Museum has been Menaker’s passion project and the Museum hopes to continue the tradition virtually with a night of celebrating and showcasing our love of dogs and the Museum’s impact on the community.

Mr. Menaker first served on the AKC Board from 1996 to 1998. Elected again in 2000, he became Vice Chairman in 2001 and served as Chairman since March 2002 until April 2019. He has been actively involved in the sport of purebred dogs for more than 40 years and has contributed to it greatly through his work with fundraising, particularly hosting the annual Theater Benefit. Dog Rescued After Falling Through Ice

I know a lot of the US is receiving lots of snow and cold temperatures right now, and chances are that small ponds and lakes are frozen solid. BUT, you never know where the weak spots are. Several ice fishermen were just rescued in Minnesota today and in Wisconsin a few days ago. So, it’s time for my annual reminder to keep your dog away from the water. It’s no joke when they fall through the ice, even if the dog is normally a strong swimmer.

And please, if your dog does fall in, call the professionals to rescue him. You don’t need to fall in, too.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
