From the AKC, in honor of St. Paddy’s Day: The Irish Breeds
Irish breeds of the American Kennel Club
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: The breed has a special connection to St. Patrick’s Day, having first appeared in the show ring at the Irish Kennel Club Championship on March 17, 1937. The breed is prized for its soft, silky, wheaten-colored coat which sheds minimally. Wheatens enjoy plenty of exercise and are happy, alert dogs.
The Labrador Retriever has done it again. The American Kennel Club (AKC®) recently announced that the intelligent, family friendly breed holds tight to the number one spot on the most popular list for the 24th consecutive year, continuing the longest reign as the nation’s top dog in AKC history.
While the Lab holds strong, the Bulldog has quietly crept up the list, landing this year at number four for the first time – its highest ranking in breed history. This gentle breed makes an excellent family companion with a natural tendency to form strong bonds with kids, an easy-to-care-for coat and minimal exercise needs.

I’m about half-way on vacation this week. I’m going to be teaching some classes, but they’re in Hawaii, so I’m counting it as vacation. I thought it might be fun to set up a game that will run while I’m gone.
I’ve dug out some photos from the Westminster archives. Each day, 5 of the photos will appear on the blog. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to guess which year is pictured. Extra points if you can name any details, such as the name or breed of the dog or the name of the owner. (And these are points in the sense that “Whose Line Is It Anyway” gives points – they don’t matter.)
