Westminster 2015: Who Do You Want to See?

rp_Morty-OK-350x234.jpgI can’t believe it’s nearly here! I leave February 13th for NYC to see this year’s Westminster show – my first time as a member of the 4th estate.

I’ll be attending Agility on Saturday, and will try to fit in a visit to the AKC Meet the Breeds event. Then, of course, I’ll go to the preliminary breed judging during the daytime on the 16th & 17th, before attending group judging and best in show both of those evenings.

So, I’m open to suggestions – what do you most want to hear about? I’ll take as many pictures as I can, but you know I’m not a great photographer, so we’ll have to see how those turn out.

Who’s got a favorite breed they want me to cover from beginning to end? You all know I’m partial to Beagles and Vizslas, so you’ll surely be seeing lots of them, but in two days I’m sure I can follow some other breeds, as well.

Let me know via your comments below.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Tuesday Top Ten: Breeds Used to Create Designer Dogs

From the Boredom Therapy website: an adorable Golden Husky
If you’re not familiar, designer dogs are those cross-breeds that are specifically bred – primarily to be cute as a button! As opposed to typical dogs whose ancestral tree hasn’t been purebred in a long time, these dogs made by always crossing the same purebred breed to another (consistent) purebred breed. For example, a Puggle is made by crossing a Pug and a Beagle. You can’t cross a Puggle to a Puggle and expect to get a baby Puggle.

Saturday Survey: Where does your dog fall on Slate’s Dog Graph?

Earlier in the week, we published the dog graph recently featured on Slate.com. Where did your dog end up?

[poll id=”57″]

For my dogs:
Kayla is a Rottweiler / German Shepherd mix, which places her as Inexplicably Overrated.
Penny is a Beagle, making her a Hot Dog.
Daisy is a Puggle, with both the Beagle and Pug (and so, presumably a mix of the two) a Hot Dog.
Cooper is a Vizsla – too rare to be on the graph, I’d imagine.
And, of course, my two cats fall into the Hot Dog quadrant. (Did you catch the cat on the graphic when you looked at it?)

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Slate.com’s Big Graph of Dog Data

from Slate.com
from Slate.com
Earlier this month, Slate.com ran a graphic excerpted from David McCandless’ book Knowledge Is Beautiful: Impossible Ideas, Invisible Patterns, Hidden Connections–Visualized.

Each dog breed is pictured to indicate size, and color-coded by breed group. Dogs facing the left side of the graph are supposed to be less intelligent than those shown facing the right.

Dogs closer to the top of the graph are more popular than those at the bottom, while those closer to the right side scored highest on a cost-benefit analysis performed by the author than those on the left side.

The analysis was performed by adding together a score on intelligence, longevity, common ailments, and cost, then subtracting out the grooming and appetite scores.

The dogs whose public hype most closely matched their high cost-benefit scores include Labs, Poodles, Dachshunds, Mini Schnauzers, Cockers, and Brittanies. And if you look closely, you’ll see a cat in there as well.) Dogs who showed as overlooked treasures include Affenpinschers, Welsh Springer Spaniels, and Border Terriers, while Great Danes, Boxers, St. Bernards, Mastiffs, and especially Bulldogs were depicted as inexplicably over-rated.

An interesting graphic, and a lot of information to digest. If all of the info in the book is this in-depth, I think my head might explode if I attempted to read it!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
