Can You Guess the Breed?

VetStreet today ran an article on the importance of correctly identifying the breeds that make up a mutt. It can have drastic implications for insurance and for the application of breed-specific bans or other legislation. Studies have found that even experts are often wrong when trying to identify the breeds that make up a mixed-breed dog. Aside from my interest in the article, I thought it was fun to make a guess about the pictured dogs. I have to say I was wrong on most of them. How many can you get right at this link?

Until next time,

Friends from the Ball Park

Meet my new friends, Twister (L) and Bandit (R). They came to meet me during my kids’ softball scrimmage last night. Aren’t they beautiful!?!?! No, Twister wasn’t being aggressive – I think I caught him mid-yawn. Right after I snapped the photo, Bandit jumped in the van to get up close & personal. I guess he thought I’d maybe take him for a ride.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Great Dane Mozart Paints for Charity

Fireworks at Mo-Night from hhdane.org
Mozart, a Harlequin Great Dane purchased at an auction in Ohio, was very soon abandoned by his owner, presumably after they realized how large Great Danes grow to be. He is now living in foster car with Harlequin Haven Great Dane Rescue in Bethel, Ohio. What makes him different than any other rescue dog? He’s a painter! (Pretty funny for a dog named after one of the greats in the music world.)

The End is Near for Breed-Specific Legislation in Ohio

If you didn’t live under a rock last fall, you may remember the exotic animal keeper in Zanesville, Ohio, who let his animals run loose before he killed himself. Lions and tigers and bears were found running loose and unfortunately, had to be killed to protect people living in the area. For a long time, Ohio has been at or near the bottom of the rankings of states for animal welfare laws. Changes are now being made, starting with the state’s treatment of dogs.

Watch for Maverick at Westminster

From LifeWithDogs.com
Dan Stallings, founder of Mid-Atlantic Weimeraner Rescue in Virginia Beach, recently posted the story of Maverick on Life With Dogs.

Dan answered an ad on Craigslist for a Weimeraner, and found the dog pictured above, drastically underweight and suffering from self-mutilation and several infections. After getting him in better health, he began showing the dog on a whim.

Soon, he began winning and is now a grand champion! Officially known as GCH Anson’s Unforgettable, he was invited to Westminster. If he takes his breed, you’ll see him tonight on USA sometime between 8 and 11 pm. Look for him in the Sporting Group, looking a lot like the picture below.

Good luck Maverick!
