Competitions were held December 11-13, 2020 in conjunction with the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

If you’re not familiar with rally, think of it as any team sport: You and your dog navigate a course, side-by-side, as you steer him through a course of 10-20 different signs. Each of these signs provides instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. The dog and handler move continuously throughout the course with the dog under control at the handler’s left side. There is a clear sense of teamwork between the dog and handler both during and between the numbered signs. Although each performance is timed, having a good race time is not the goal; it’s all about working as a team while performing the skills, with the dog under control. TOP DOGS CROWNED AT AKC FAST CAT INVITATIONAL

The 2020 AKC Fast CAT Invitational brought together 117 dogs from across the country on December 9-11, 2020 in Orlando, FL in conjunction with the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin. The fastest dogs from each breed, based on rankings from AKC Fast Coursing Ability Tests (Fast CAT), were invited to participate in the inaugural AKC Fast CAT Invitational for the designation of Fastest Dog USA or Speed of the Breeds Champion. All dogs ran three times, with the cumulative speed determining the fastest dogs.

This is the first time I’ve seen this event. How fun! Watching dogs run when they are built for speed is amazing. Loved the Greyhound, Saluki, and Afghan. But even more fun were the tiny dogs with their short legs going so fast they were just a blur!

And, by the way, the Turtle Award went to a Pekingese named Buster!

Congrats to all who competed!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Who Won the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin?

A closely held secret! I can’t reveal the winners yet because it hasn’t been televised yet, and I don’t want to be a spoiler.

If you absolutely need your dog show fix, there are highlights available on AKC.TV and on the ESPN app. There are also features on rally, obedience, and (my favorite) agility available, as well as the All-Breed Puppy and Junior Stakes.

Otherwise, you’ll have to wait with the rest of us to see it in a three-hour special on ABC on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at 2 p.m. ET, which I will be live-blogging. as usual.

Sorry! (Not sorry)

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
