Westminster 2018: What’s Happening Now?

Shih Tzu ShowIf you’ve never been to Westminster or even another major dog show, it can be pretty overwhelming. During the day, all events are being held at Piers 92 and 94, which are large empty rooms along the Hudson River. Westminster is such a big show, it takes up two of the piers.

In addition to typical dog show judging, today’s events include the 3rd Annual Masters Obedience Championship, where dogs and their handlers show their ability to respond to commands. And no dog show would be complete without hundreds of vendors showing their dog-related wares including leashes, coats, toys, pet waste containment systems, and everything else you can think of that relates to dogs. Basset Hound Agility

In honor of today’s Super Bowl and Puppy Bowl, I wanted to post something athletic. I’ve always said I could never do agility because I wouldn’t be able to keep up with my dog. I see now that my problem is I don’t have the right dog. This one, I could keep up with.

This Basset has wild skills on each apparatus, but she just doesn’t see the need to display them with any speed. Bobbi Jo Cooley did eventually complete the event, but only after she thoroughly sniffed out the entire course.

So sweet!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Expanding the Puppy Bowl Franchise

We’ve been loving on those puppies and kittens at Animal Planet’s annual Puppy Bowl for 13 years now, with the 14th annual show queued up for Super Bowl Sunday (February 4, 2018) at 3:00 pm. Since it’s been so popular, Animal Planet has expanded the concept to include senior dogs with the first ever Dog Bowl airing tonight at 8 pm. Dogs over the age of seven will compete, but they all win because they’ll be finding forever homes. The video from Baltimore’s CBS affiliate shows a few of the contenders.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

2018 Paw of Courage Award Winners

SONY DSCThe American Kennel Club (AKC®), the world’s largest purebred dog registry and leading advocate for dogs, is proud to announce the recipients of the first 2018 AKC Paw of Courage awards to show appreciation for the working canines that put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. This award specifically recognizes those who are serving or have served their departments honorably and have demonstrated heroism in the line of duty.

“The inspiring stories of working canines touch our hearts every day,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “Each of these dogs serves as a testimony to the loyalty and courage that dogs bring our communities. The sacrifices they make to serve and protect do not go unnoticed and we are honored to award these three brave canines with the 2018 AKC Paw of Courage as a symbol of our gratitude.” Continue reading 2018 Paw of Courage Award Winners

K-9 Loki

LokiFrom the Facebook page of the K-9 Defender Fund: “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog”..Mark Twain

Meet K9 Loki of the Howe, Texas Police Department, where Sgt. Keith Milks and K9 Loki work hard in their community to keep drugs off the streets! Loki is an 8-10 year old Jack Russell/Fox Terrier mix who was picked up as a stray in Cibolo, Texas. The staff of the local animal services department, recognized a great potential in Loki and made sure he was given the training to become certified in narcotics detection. Sgt. Milks and Loki have been a team since early Dec. of 2017. K9DF is pleased to be providing another amazing K9 with an amazing story, the gift of a Buddy Bag. We hope the bag does nothing more than collect dust while in their possession. Here’s to a long, safe, successful and amazing career together you two!

Who knew a little terrier could be a K-9? Kudos to the city of Howe, on looking outside the box to find a big dog in a small body who they could rescue and rehabilitate to a useful function!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog

AKC Royal Canin National Championship Dog Show Round-Up

Striker

The results are in from the weekend’s big show in Orlando!  I love this event because they put such an emphasis on Junior Handlers and because they combine so many sporting events with the conformation show. So now, without further ado, the winners!

GCHP CH Silverhall Strike Force, an ASCOB Cocker Spaniel known as “Striker” triumphed over nearly 5,000 dogs to earn a $50,000 cash prize, a paw print pendant arrayed in sparking round diamonds from KAY® Jewelers’ “LOVE is a four legged word collection” and the title of Best in Show at the AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin. “Striker,” owned by Regina Beinhauer & Carolee Douglas of Venetia, Pennsylvania and bred by Wilson S. Pike and Bonnie S. Pike was crowned “National Champion” by Best in Show judge Mr. Roger R. Hartinger after a weekend of intense canine competition.
