Southwest Airlines Steps Up to Help Animals Caught in Hurricane

After the horrible news published earlier, I had to post this feel-good story from the Twitter feed of Southwest:

If you click on the photo, you’ll get to see all the great pictures they took, even if you don’t have a Twitter account.

Kudos to a fantastic humanitarian (animalitarian?) effort!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Who Leaves Their Dog to Drown in a Hurricane?

These are the lucky animals who were eventually rescued. Not all animals were so lucky, and in some cases, it was due to malicious, or at least uninformed, actions by their families.

From Blue Lives Matter: As authorities search for survivors who may have stayed behind to weather the storm, they are also finding dogs chained up outside or locked in pens with no means of escaping Hurricane Irma.

Think how your dog acts during a conventional thunderstorm. Can you even imagine how scary a hurricane would be for a dog? As if the property destruction and human toll of the hurricane weren’t enough, this literally turns my stomach.

Although about 60 people voluntarily surrendered their pets to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, the agency also found at least 40 animals who had been left behind as people evacuated. The agency will pursue felony animal cruelty charges against those owners who chose to abandon their animals, assuming they can be identified.

Tips from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control for dog families facing a natural disaster:

– Don’t let your dog out right after the storm passes, it’s going to be confused by the damage and debris. Animal caretakers see an a spike in animal injuries after storms because animals get cut and caught on debris.

– If you come upon an abandoned pet, use caution. The combination of confused dogs and stressed people result in an uptick of dog bites after storms.

Our appreciation goes out to all those who are working to take care of the animal victims of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Rescuing Dogs from the Flood

Betty Walter

Photo by Betty Walter of Long Drive Dog and Cat Hospital in Houston. Here’s the caption from Betty’s facebook page:
To these amazing guys that help me and some of my neighbors dogs that I rescued. I was worried there was too many dogs on the boat and it would tipped over. I told them I would stay behind and for them to make 2 trips. They said NO we are taking all and you. We had 21 dogs on this boat. No place for any humans on this boat. We had to walk in water over my head to get out.

Please I am going to need help if you can donate. paypal.me/betty23

So many people and animals in need. I’m so glad Betty was able to find help to get her dogs out.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Saturday Survey: Emergency Plans

With Harvey coming onshore in Texas, and looking like he’s there to stay for awhile, my thoughts turned to evacuation plans. If you stay in place, the American Red Cross recommends you plan on help not reaching you for at least three days after a disaster. That means you need food, water, medications, and supplies, not just for yourself, but for your animals, as well. So, here’s my question: have you planned for what you will do in the event of a disaster?

When Hank, a 4-year old chocolate Labrador Retriever, came to live at the Fox Valley Humane Association, he was accompanied by Fuzzy, a purple stuffed hippo. The staff couldn’t resist having a little fun with the pair. Their Instagram post featuring this photo read, “If you aren’t ready for a 4 year old Chocolate Lab to come home when you adopt your fuzzy Hippopotamus…well, sorry, we can’t approve your application.” Continue reading Hank and Fuzzy: A Love Story
