Does Your Local Fire Department Have Pet Oxygen Masks?

Bakersfield Now is reporting that PETA will be presenting an award to the Bakersfield Fire Department for their role in the rescue of a dog from a residential fire last week.

The rescue was made possible because the Department carries pet oxygen masks on their fire vehicles. The masks were provided by a local Girl Scout troop who raised money for the donation.

Does your local fire department carry these life-saving masks? Find out, and if not, maybe you could start a GoFundMe account or some other type of fundraiser to provide them.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Why Shaving Your Dog’s Fur Doesn’t Make Him Cooler

dog heat mapTake a look at this temperature map showing the effect of shaving off fur. It doesn’t make a lot of sense at first because it appears to show that the skin temperature on the shaved portion of the dog actually has a cooler temperature than the part with the thick, heavy fur. In fact, this really IS correct! Continue reading Why Shaving Your Dog’s Fur Doesn’t Make Him Cooler

Firefighters Rescue Siri the Border Collie

From NBC4 in Washington, DC: Maryland firefighters had an interesting rescue run over the weekend when an 85-pound Border Collie named Siri fell into a 8-foot sinkhole near Annapolis.

Although it was deep, the sinkhole only measured about 2-feet by 2-feet, making it tricky for the firefighter to be lowered into the hole to get the dog. But, 90-minutes later, they were able to get the dog to the surface.

Siri was very much in need of a bath, but was otherwise fine.

Kudos to all the firefighters who took the time to care.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

From Fox32 in Chicago:

Lana, a 3-year old yellow Lab, gained fame as the Saddest Dog in the World when a picture of her in her kennel was widely circulated in 2015. She was adopted after that, but was returned to the shelter less than a year later when she snapped at her adoptive mom. She’s now on a short list for euthanasia due to over-crowding at the shelter and has until May 20th to be pulled from the shelter. Continue reading Do you remember Lana the Labrador?

11-year old rushes to the defense of Pit Bulls

Pit Bull Standing

Check out this sweet letter to the editor from a young one named Ryleigh Johnson. Sometimes, pre-teens have more sense than we so-called adults do.

To the editor:

I am 11 years old and I love all dogs. In your “Pit Bull Bites Jefferson County Sheriff’s Arm” article, why couldn’t you just write, “Dog Bites Jefferson County Sheriff’s Arm?” Pit bulls are mistaken for mean, fighting dogs. They can actually be a loyal and sweet breed – they are my favorite.

If a golden retriever bit a sheriff you would not point out the breed like you did for the pit bull. They don’t need any more bad publicity. We need to work together to change the way people think about pit bulls so we can save them instead of making people more scared of them.

Many pit bulls are euthanized because of people like you. You should write an article about the next Chihuahua who bites someone.

I’m not sure which paper this appeared in, but kudos to the writer!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
