This came across my Facebook page the other day. What a splendid idea! I’m not sure where they sell them commercially, but I think each of us could sure enough make one for personal use! There is a cut-out version on a DIY webpage if you’re not feeling particularly crafty today.
As you probably already know, October is Fire Prevention Month. When you are making your family’s escape plan, don’t forget to include your pets. If you can safely take them with you when you’re evacuating, obviously that’s the first choice, but you should never go back in to get them if you can’t find them on the way out.
Consider getting a window cling that alerts firefighters to the presence of animals in your home. I did a quick search and found a 2-pack of stickers at Petco.com for $1.99 (Pictured here).
From the American Humane Association: Did you know each military working dog saves the lives of between 150-200 servicemen and women by detecting IEDs and other hidden weapons? Did you also know that despite their service and the generally good efforts of military, there has been no guarantee that military dogs will be reunited with their handlers or bought back to the U.S. after their retirement.
Have you seen the news about this Good Samaritan pilot yet? Apparently, the heating system in the cargo hold malfunctioned during a long-distance flight, and the pilot became concerned about the French Bulldog he knew was down there. Concerned enough that he diverted the flight to Frankfurt and loaded the dog onto another flight.
It ended up taking just over an hour, but apparently none of the passengers complained. Which was good of them. I’m not sure I would have been so nice. (Why, yes, I am feeling crabby today!) Trans-Atlantic flights are pretty grueling to begin with, and I can never find a comfortable position on an airplane. I’m glad these passengers were so concerned about the dog, and very glad the pilot took the right action!
Did you know that today is the 11th annual National Dog Day? According to the official website, millions of people celebrate around the world.
This reminds me of a book I used to read to my son, called “Go, Dog, Go!” It was one of his favorites, and I always remember how happy he’d look when we got to a page near the end where it showed all kinds of dogs wearing party hats. The text read, “It’s a dog party!” It still makes me smile. Continue reading National Dog Day→
We posted this infographic last week, but it was too small to see. The ASPCA has now provided it to me in what I hope will be a more user-friendly format. Click on each of the below thumbnails to see that section of the poster.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
