National Lost Dog Awareness Day

Waiting Lonely DogApril 23rd is National Lost Dog Awareness Day, a good day to check your dog’s tags and chip registry to make sure everything is up to date. Are the tags legible? Do both the tags and the registry have your cell number? If you have or had a landline, you may have that info still listed.

If your dog is not micro-chipped, today might be the day to call around and find out where you can get it done inexpensively. Or check on line for special events in your area where they may be inserting chips at very low cost.

When was the last time you walked your fence line looking for weak spots that may become escape routes in the future?

You should also inspect your leashes, collars, and tie-outs to make sure nothing is getting frayed.

Do you have a current picture of your dog along with his or her current weight and height? That can be important if you have to post flyers or advertise your lose online.

I’m hoping you never need these precautions, but better safe than sorry.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Bella’s Bill

German Shepherd, 5 years old, in front of white backgroundFrom The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The Animal Legal Defense Fund reports [t]his week a man infamously charged with cruelly killing his own dog was just arrested for living with another dog. He is the first person to be charged with failing to register with the Nassau County Animal Abuse registry.

Assistance Needed for K-9 Breeze

BreezeAfter an unfortunate break, one of K-9 Breeze’s bottom canine teeth needs a specially made Titanium Cap. We are asking for donations to help alleviate the cost for the handler and his family. The total surgical procedure is approximately $3,000 and has to be done ‪on February 15th.‬

The Cambridge (Ohio) police department has multiple K-9’s and funding can be tough, we understand that. The local veterinarian has helped tremendously as well, however this is a costly procedure.

Due to the fact that Breeze is certified in Apprehensions, he is a great asset to his Department and the Cambridge, OH community. The tooth will improve his daily life and help him to continue as many as 8 years as a healthy and dedicated Police Officer. Continue reading Assistance Needed for K-9 Breeze

Shelter Bowl IV

shelter bowlIn honor of the big game this week, GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Bank is celebrating our fourth annual Shelter Bowl.

Help us meet our goal of $20,000 to provide nutritious pet food to shelter animals all across the United States.

Food is one of the most vital needs for animal shelters and rescues. It’s also the largest expense for many of these organizations, but more money spent on food means less funding for other life-saving programs for the animals in their care. Continue reading Shelter Bowl IV

A Mega Deal for a Friend

PetulaFrom the Facebook page of my friend, Jamiley: Before today I had never been in the pound. Never been to the Humane Society either. I don’t know how people that work in these places do it every day. It ripped my heart out to see dogs “stuck” in cages. When the guy helping us opened up Petula’s cage all the other dogs started barking because they wanted out too. And every single one of them had something about it you could just fall in love with. I wish I could’ve chosen them all. Continue reading A Mega Deal for a Friend

Ohio Names Shelter Animals Official State Pet

Animal Shelter KennelI’m proud of my home state of Ohio. The Ohio House voted with a 78-0 vote on SB 86 which includes language sponsored by state Representative Laura Lanese:

“A shelter pet is hereby designated as the official pet of the state to raise public awareness of shelter animals.”

The measure still needs to pass the state Senate and be signed by the Governor, but it’s a start!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
