Who knew this was a thing? The top award at the Cannes Film Festival is the Palm D’Or, so as a take-off on that, they created an alternative award called the Palm Dog in 2001. It is awarded to the best performance by a canine (live or animated) or group of canines during the festival. The award consists of a leather dog collar with the term “PALM DOG”. Yearbook Dog
When students at Stafford County High School received their yearbooks this year, they found the face of one of their classmates, Alpha. Think that’s a funny name for a student? Not when the student is a dog. Continue reading Yearbook Dog
Glad I Live in The Land of The Free
Here’s a story from the NY Times that may set your head spinning, like it did mine. On Friday, the city of Tehran, Iran will hold elections for its city council. A local veterinarian is running for one of the 21 seats. So far, so good, but keep reading. Continue reading Glad I Live in The Land of The Free
Dog News Round-up
Today’s news bag contained several dog-related items I thought you might like to know about.
First up, a hero from Des Moines: USA Today reports on Capone, a stray who had moved 18 months before into a home where Angela Fulmer and her nine children live. The Min Pin/Chihuahua/Whippet mix wouldn’t stop barking, which is unusual for him, Fulmer said. Continue reading Dog News Round-up
Sights from Stark County, Ohio K9 Memorial Dedication
The video shows the placement of a rose in memory of K9 Jethro at the base of the new Stark County K9 Memorial. Below are more pictures from the ceremony, which was very moving, in spite of the rainy, dreary day. Continue reading Sights from Stark County, Ohio K9 Memorial Dedication
Monument for Jethro and other Stark County K9s
The Canton Repository is reporting on a new memorial that has been erected in front of the Stark County Courthouse to honor K9s killed in action. Jethro, the dog who died after being shot by a grocery store burglar in January, 2016, is one of two dogs whose names are “engraved and gilded in 23-karat gold leaf on a jet-black tablet with a gray granite base,” said Philip Lago, the monument designer.
Luko is the second dog whose name is already inscribed on the monument. He was hit by a car close to the same spot where Jethro was killed, back in February, 1998. Continue reading Monument for Jethro and other Stark County K9s
Sweet Reunion
There is nothing so happy as a dog’s tail.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
Rabbit Hash, KY
A Facebook post from a friend of mine who is traveling in Northern Kentucky.
Sunday afternoon, settin’ a spell on the front porch of the General Store with Miss Katie, eating caramels and drinking iced tea. The mayor of Rabbit Hash is a pitbull named Brynneth Pawltrow; her vice mayor is a terrier named JackJack; and they’re both mighty friendly. Right before this, deep in the Kentucky countryside, we saw a camel. I’m not making any of this up. Continue reading Rabbit Hash, KY
Man Bites Dog
Yes, you read that headline correctly. Fox35 in Orlando is reporting on a man who has been accused of biting his girlfriend’s dog in a misguided attempt to teach the dog a lesson. (I’m not sure what that lesson would be…that it’s ok to bite?) Continue reading Man Bites Dog
Reunited and it feels so good
Meet Pumpkin, the little dog who got lost in New Mexico and ended up in Georgia. 11Alive in Atlanta reports that compassionate people and a microchip were instrumental in the dog’s return to family.
Pumpkin had been wandering around Allatoona Landing Marina for weeks when Annette Hatt noticed him and took him home. She connected with Kathy Lee Russell on a lost animals page, and Kathy agreed to board Pumpkin and have him vetted. The good folks at Animal Hospital of Towne Lake found out that the 7-year old Lhasa Apso was not only healthy, but was also microchipped.
Meanwhile, back in New Mexico, Manny Ornelas had been searching for his dog for months after the pup had been stolen from his yard in November.
Georgia-based Ruff Redemption Rescue provided Pumpkin with a plane ride home, where a very happy and relieved family greeted him at the airport.
I just love a happy ending!
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
