Make Your Dog a Star!

Best-selling author, producer and screenwriter Nicholas Sparks is ready to make one lucky fan’s adopted pet a star in an upcoming novel! He’s teamed up with nonprofit PetSmart Charities for a unique contest to celebrate shelter pets.

Sparks is a longtime pet adoption advocate and lives with three rescue dogs. The contest asks for fans to submit their pet’s adoption story. Sparks will choose the most heartwarming story, and the lucky winner’s adopted pet will be named in one of Sparks’ upcoming novels and will also be featured on Sparks’ website, along with an introduction by the author.

Dogs Keep Owner Alive After Fall

ABC News is reporting on two Golden Retrievers who stuck with 76-year old Judy Muhe after she fell and was unable to get up. Judy’s Parkinson’s Disease makes it tough for her to keep warm, and the dogs lay next to her on the floor for two days until help arrived. I knew there was a reason I like Goldens!

Dog Rescued After Fall into 200-Foot Gorge

Wow! The Blaze is reporting a truly amazing story. After their dog plunged over the edge of a gorge, this family held a memorial service, sure that no one could have survived the fall.

Just when they were ready to leave the park, a Good Samaritan said that he had seen the dog on a ledge. The rescue shows you should never, ever give up hope!

#SaveTheWhiteDog

If you’re following this hashtag on Twitter, you already know the story. If not, you’ll want to watch this video. The LA Times and KTLA are reporting on a small white dog, who we have since found out is named Gordo, was hit by a van being chased by the highway patrol.

The video is not overly gory, but it does show the dog being hit. Gordo was rushed to an emergency vet and is now recovering nicely, although he did lose a leg.

The video is on its way to going viral, as is the hashtag #SaveTheWhiteDog. A donation fund has been set up. If you’d like to contribute, please visit Access Animal Hospitals‘ site.

Doggies.com extends our best wishes to Gordo for a speedy recovery! Feel better soon little guy. Your Daddy misses you!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Anyone happen to be traveling from Oregon to Pennsylvania?

This 7-year old Jack Russell Terrier, Gidget, is looking to hitch a ride from Portland to Philadelphia. Gidget was happily living with her family in Philly until two days after Easter, when she disappeared. Thank God she has a microchip because when she was found wondering the streets of Tualatin, a suburb of Portland, she was taken to a shelter who scanned the chip and found her family.

The only problem now is getting her back east. The family cannot afford to fly out to get her, and Washington County Animal Services does not have funding available for transportation.

As for Gidget, The Statesman Journal reports she appears to be in good shape. She lost about 5 pounds during her ordeal, but is still in very good health. No one knows how she ended up in Oregon, or how long she was on the streets before she was found.

If you can help with the transport, please contact Washington County Animal Services at 503-846-7041.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

RIP K-9 Kye

RIP KyeFrom the Oklahoma City PD’s Facebook page – so sad!
A Final Goodbye – Sgt. Ryan Stark says goodbye to his K-9 partner, Kye, at Kye’s funeral yesterday at First Southern Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Kye was killed in the line of duty earlier this week. #RIPKye

The memorial video they have posted on Facebook is worth watching.

Rest easy, good boy. Thank you for your service.

On a related note, I’m sending sympathy hugs to my sister, Marilyn, who had to put her beloved Japanese Chin, Molly, down yesterday due to heart failure.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Keep Your Dog Safe from Kidnappers

shutterstock_135827198According to the American Kennel Club, dog-nappings are on the rise. Over 600 dogs were stolen in 2013, a 33% increase over 2012. In 2014, the breeds most often kidnapped are pit bulls and pit mixes, Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Rottweilers, German shepherds, bulldogs and Shih Tzus. Much like with human kidnapping, the crime is often based in greed. You will get a ransom call saying that your dog will be returned when you pony up some money.

What can you do to keep your dog safe?
