OK, first of all, I have to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE the name of this mixed breed: Chihuahua + Dachshund = Chiweenie. Besides that, this is a phenomenal story! When Millie, a Chiweenie from Gainesville, FL, ran away from home, she had no idea she was about to go for the ride of her life.

Pit Bull Adopted by Senior Nuns
Three nuns walked into the dog shelter…
No, this isn’t the set up for a joke. In Nyack, NY, three senior citizen nuns were in the market for a dog, and they knew Hi Tor Animal Care Center just might have one that fit the bill.
Specifically, they were looking for a dog that no one else would want. “I wanted to bring a dog home that might get euthanized if we didn’t take her,” Sister Veronica Mendez said. “And when I noticed the sign said ‘9 years,’ I said, ‘Virginia, we want this one, because nobody else is going to want her.'”
The oddest thing about this story might be the fact that Remy, the dog they picked, is a Pit Bull, probably the misunderstood dog on the planet. The Sisters haven’t seemed to notice that Pit Bulls are supposed to be vicious. In fact, one of the nuns walks with a cane, and gentle Remy seems to have a special interest in taking care of her. Dogs always know, don’t they?
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
Rest in Peace K-9 Rocco
I wanted to post something about the death of Rocco, a Pittsburgh K-9 killed in the line of duty. However, when I looked on the Brimfield Police Department‘s Facebook page, I realized that there was nothing I could say that would express my sorrow any better than Chief Oliver’s post. Here are his thoughts on this tragedy.

Tuesday Top Ten: Most Registered Dog Breeds in the US, 2013 Edition
The American Kennel Club has announced their list of breed registrations from 2013. Although many owners don’t choose to register their dogs, the number of registrations received for each breed is considered an indication of the popularity of the breed. Of course, there are undoubtedly many more mutt-i-grees than purebred dogs in the world, but this list includes only those dogs who carry an actual pedigree.

NC Family Saved from House Fire by Dog
From North Carolina: I bet this family is glad they decided to adopt a dog! When Tatia Johnson fell asleep in her recliner, she never dreamed it would save her life. Usually she sleeps in her bedroom with the door closed, but on a recent Friday night, she was just too tired to get out of her easy chair. Aside from a possible crick in her neck, this turned out to be a good thing.

Edmonton Dog Rescued from Frozen River
When the family’s Great Pyrenees, Rosco, went missing, Dave Baird feared the worst. He had experienced the theft of two dogs a year ago, and thought tragedy had struck his family twice. He was right about the tragedy, but wrong about the theft.

Italian Dog Goes to Church After Mistress Dies
From Il Messaggero newspaper in Rome: When 12-year old German Shepherd Tommy’s owner died early this year, he followed the coffin from their village to the church. Now, he can’t get enough of the masses held at Santa Maria Assunta in San Donaci. He returns every day when the church bells summon, sitting through masses, baptisms, and funerals, according to Father Donato Panna, who doesn’t know what he’d do without the dog’s comforting presence now.
What a sweet story – yet another example of a dog’s loyalty!
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
Saturday Survey: Crime and Punishment
I am always horrified when I read about some horrible case of animal cruelty, and I find out the perpetrator got off with just a slap on the wrist. What about the rules in your state?
