Exxon Mobile just announced they are pulling their sponsorship of the Iditarod after this year, citing the economic state of the world right now. PETA is applauding this as an animal rights victory. Race officials, meanwhile, cite the number of volunteer veterinarians who attend to the dogs throughout their journey.
My humble opinion, formed by watching the race from afar, is that the dogs appear to be having a great deal of fun.
There’s not a blue check of authenticity yet, but I believe the place to go for tweets from Champ and Major Biden is @TheFirstDogs. Rumor has it they are not at the White House yet; they’re waiting for everything to calm down a bit.
There’s also an account for @TheFirstCatUS, for the promised rescue cat.
Can’t wait to start seeing what’s on the minds of all the first pets. No word on who is helping them with the typing. It’s tough to tweet when you don’t have thumbs!

This is a shelter with an uncommon focus. In addition to rescuing animals, W-Underdogs works with underprivileged kids. Their mission: The W-Underdogs organization empowers youth in underserved communities to discover their voices and teaches them the value of compassion toward animals and people.
They are in the process of moving into a new shelter in Atlanta, so the fire wasn’t as devastating as it might have been, and all the animals are A-OK.
I’m told the shelter is working on collecting funds to help their Good Samaritan, but I couldn’t find a link anywhere.
Remember the little puppy who got snatched by a gator, and his dad pulled him free? Recognizing Gunnar’s bravery, the Lee County (FL) Sheriff’s Department has now made him a deputy!
