Dog: (Cave) Man’s Best Friend

33,000 year old Dog Skull found in Siberia

New research shows that we have had a relationship with dogs since prehistoric times. It seems our caveman ancestors domesticated dogs at least 33,000 years ago as a canine skull found in Siberia shows. This interesting find represents some of the oldest evidence of dog domestication. The Siberian dog skull’s snout and teeth show that it was a domesticated animal and not a wolf.

Not only is dog “Man’s Best Friend”, but he was “Caveman’s Best Friend” too! Read the full story.

The 33,000 year old skull found in Siberia shows the short snout and crowded teeth that identify it as a domestic dog.

It’s a Dog’s Life for Katie Heigl

Photo: Larsen & Talbert / USA WEEKEND
Did you catch the story about Katherine Heigl in USA Today? I thought we were crazy for having 4 dogs, but she and her husband have SEVEN! Read the article here, and make sure you go see her movie. (It’s not about dogs, but it’s based on the first book in one of my favorite series – the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich).

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Albuquerque Dog Eats the Family Jewels

KOB-TV reports on a 10-month old Basset Hound who found a $4,500 wedding ring just a little too tempting.

Rachelle Atkinson had a habit of leaving her wedding ring on her nightstand while she slept. Only when she woke up a few weeks ago, the ring was gone! Suspecting that the dog, Coraline, might have taken it, they spent the next 10 days searching through her droppings, but had no luck.

They finally took Coraline to the vet for an X-ray and found the ring lodged in her stomach and not going anywhere. So, the vet inserted a tool down Coraline’s throat to retrieve it.

We’re happy to report everything came out okay!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Does Your Dog Know What You’re Thinking?

(The closest I could come to a dog wearing Karnac the Magnificent's turban.)

Have you ever gotten the feeling that your dog knows what you’re about to do?  A recent study completed by Jozsef Topal of the Institute for Psychological Research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences shows that dogs track our eye movements to decide on our intent.

Miracle Avalanche Dog (Video)

The Associated Press is reporting on a Welsh Corgi from Billings, Montana who was feared dead after an avalanche, but who made his way back to his family’s motel room 4 days later.

Dave Gaillard and his wife, from Bozeman, stayed at the motel the night before they went back-country skiing near Cooke City outside Yellowstone National Park.  The avalanche killed Dave, and everyone thought the dog, Ole, had been taken as well.

Eleven-year old Marguerite Gaillard was busy making a memorial collage of Ole’s pictures when word was received that the dog was still alive.

The hotel owner drove the dog back to Bozeman for a reunion with his family.

Our sympathy goes out to the Gaillard family on their loss.  And we’re glad Ole was able to bring about at least one bright spot.

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

One Last Ride for K-9 Officer Kora

Photo: Richard Messina / Hartford Courant

From the Hartford Courant via Life With Dogs: Kora, an 11-year old German Shepherd, retired in August after nine years of service with the West Hartford K-9 Unit. Everyone expected her to live out her retirement with her handler, Officer Eric Rocheleau. However, he noticed that she was beginning to seem sluggish, so he took her to the vet last Monday.

I hate to get political, but…

Have you seen this story about Mitt Romney yet?  I usually don’t bring up too much about politics here, but really, this is just plain stupid, no matter who you plan to vote for. Apparently, Romney tied his dog’s crate to the roof of the family car for a 12-hour road trip. The poor dog must have been scared to death!

I have one question for you, Governor: If the crate was totally air-tight, how did Seamus breathe?

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
