We posted earlier this week about Harbor, the dog who was recently named as being the world-record holder for having the longest ears on a living dog. It made me think about awards my dogs might be able to win. I think their biggest talent is the Oscar-winning performance they give, trying to convince each of us that no one else in the house fed them yet. Continue reading Saturday Survey: Award-Winning Dogs

World Record Ears
Congratulations to Harbor, an 8-year old Black and Tan Coonhound from Colorado, who has just been named the world record holder for having the longest ears on any living dog.
Like most of us, Harbor is not perfectly symmetrical. His right ear measures 13.5 inches long, while the left one is 12.25 inches.
His mom says he used to trip over his ears when he was younger, but has since grown into them.
The longest ears on any dog ever? Tigger, a Bloodhound had ears measuring 13.5 and 13.75 inches. Sadly, he was taken from us too soon, in 2009.
Until next time,
Good day. and good dog!
Snickers, the service dog, exempt from Aurelia’s Pit Bull ban
Aurelia, Iowa has a Pit Bull ban, like many other jurisdictions across the country. Not too long ago, it came to the city’s attention that Snickers, a registered service dog who lives with retired Chicago police officer James Sak, is a Pit Bull, Lab, and Boxer mix. Snickers assists Sak after the man had a stroke in 2008.

Save Our Pets Food Bank
In case you missed it in the holiday hullabaloo, CNN reported on Christmas Day about the Save Our Pets Food Bank in Atlanta. We’ve highlighted this problem here on the doggies.com blog several times, but it’s worth repeating. Continue reading Save Our Pets Food Bank
Shaka: Once a Shelter Dog, Now a Police Dog
Shaka, an American Staffordshire Terrier, was abandoned by her owner to New York’s death row several years ago, but she was rescued before they had a chance to euthanize her. She found new purpose as a police dog and is now a key weapon in the Milwaukee PD’s war on drugs, where she was successful in 18 of her first 20 searches.

Riding the Rails with K.C.
I just love it when I can refer you to one of my favorite blogs, the one associated with The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC.
They recently carried the story of KC, an Australian Shepherd / Border Collie mix who was found riding on top of a boxcar! Animal control officers used a forklift to lower the dog to the ground, and he is now up for adoption from the Mississippi Animal Rescue League.
Disability, Schmisability: Wheelchair no impediment to agility champion
From Life with Dogs: Zip, a Border Collie who had five agility championships under her belt, was hit by a car last January. Now fitted for a wheelchair, she wanted to continue to compete. Would she let a physical disability stop her? Not a chance! Check out how she tries to jump over the hurdles which were taken down in consideration of her chair.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
A New Kind of Animal Cruelty
OK, this story wins the award for the grossest one I’ve seen. From Beaufort, SC: Deputies and animal control officers received an anonymous tip to check out a storage building belonging to Gina Marie Alfano, 43, and Kevin John Diers, 52. You’ll never guess what they found, but think about how the Dixie Chicks disposed of the body in their song “Goodbye Earl”.

Update on last Thursday’s post about the woman who left 22 dogs abandoned in a filthy home here in my little corner of the world.

Stand up for dog rights!
I have often wondered if, faced with dire consequences, I would choose to do the right thing. A big wag of the doggies.com tail to Lynn Jones, a Reno-Tahoe Airport baggage handler who lost her job because she wouldn’t risk a dog’s life to follow her supervisor’s orders. (And a big mean doggies.com growl to the supervisor who fired her.)
