Did you see the news from the Sydney Opera House over the weekend? It seems American artist Laurie Anderson and rocker husband Lou Reed came up with the idea to have a concert specifically for dogs. The couple are dog lovers and thought it might be neat to look out from a concert stage onto a roomful of dogs enjoying the show.

Miss Ellie, 2009’s Ugliest Dog, Dead at age 17
The Associated Press is reporting today that Miss Ellie, the Chinese Crested Hairless who won Animal Planet’s 2009 World’s Ugliest Dog contest, has died at Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where she starred in shows at the Comedy Barn. The dog had also appeared on “Dogs 101” on Animal Planet.
In honor of the work Miss Ellie and her human, Dawn Goehring, did in fundraising for the Sevier County (TN) Humane Society, Pigeon Forge Mayor Keith Whaley had previously issued a proclamation declaring November 12th as Miss Ellie Day.
You can leave your condolences on Miss Ellie’s Facebook page.

Wednesday’s Wild Wacky World of Dog News
Just a few of the stories that have been in the news over the past couple of days:
Will your dog bite the mailman?
You’ve heard the old joke, “Does your dog bite?” and the answer is, of course, “Does he have teeth?” The truth is that any dog, given the proper set of circumstances, can and will bite.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) report that small children, the elderly, and Postal Service carriers, in that order are the most frequent victims of dog bites.
May 18 – 24 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and the United States Postal Service wants you to know the following.

Worried about the oil spill in the Gulf? Get your dog groomed!
In the wild and wacky world of dog news this week, this story really caught my eye. According to Matter of Trust, a charity focused on recycling, there is an actual use for all of the fur you comb or clip off your dogs. Seems it is very good at absorbing oil!

$400,000 for the Humane Society in Canton!
How’s this for a feel-good story? Seems there was a woman in Canton (my hometown) who, although no one ever knew it, was quite wealthy when she died. She had lived frugally, primarily in residence hotels, for most of her adult life and had never owned a pet. However, when she died, she bequeathed half of her substantial investment holdings to the Stark County Humane Society! Her friends are shocked, and her family is contesting the will, but the agency’s board is dancing in the streets!

Wednesday’s Wild, Wacky World of Dog News
I’ve found quite a few news items of interest this week.
First up: Dog Stuck in Recliner at Assisted Living Center. Firefighters in Naperville, Illinois responded to an emergency call from the Sunrise of Naperville Assisted Living Center, arriving to find 5-year old Ebonyser stuck inside a recliner after the electrical controls stopped working. The terrier lives with 87-year old Ken Maris, who says Ebonyser has some nerve damage and is on pain killers, but is recovering well. Firefighters had to saw the chair apart to get the dog out, while a nurse’s aid hung onto the chair to relieve the pressure on the dog.
