Many show dogs are taken through their paces at conformation shows by professional handlers, particularly at the national level. Dog shows are held nearly every weekend, in venues all around the country. This can be a lot of travel for owners who happen to have other things going on in their lives, so many dogs are turned over to professionals to help them become champions. A little down time at the 2016 AKC Nationals

I didn’t want you all to think I forgot about you, so I wanted to let you know what was going on.  We spent about 3 or 4 hours at the AKC Meet the Breeds event, then Uber-ed back to the hotel.  I’m now going through over 400 pictures, picking out the best ones to show you – coming up as soon as I get through the whole stack.

This evening’s event – the Best in Group showings for the Toy, Hound, Sporting, and Non-Sporting groups begins at 6 pm, so I’ll be back to bring you all the excitement from the show ring at that time.

To hold you over until my next post, here are two very contented dogs at the Meet the Breeds event.

2016 AKC National Championships Initial Impressions

Wow! These are the first pictures from this morning. We are at the Orlando Convention Center, and the venue is HUGE! (Or YUGE if you’re a Donald Trump fan.) We even saw this cute little Pom practicing his show prance in the hotel parking lot this morning.

Friday Funny: Watching the Dog Show

best-seatBest seat in the house for watching the dog show.

I’ll be live-blogging my little heart out, but if you want to watch: The evening competitions will be streamed live beginning at 6:00 p.m. each night on akc.org, on RoyalCanin.com, and live on Fido TV. The show will be televised on the Hallmark Channel on January 23, 2017 6-9 PM ET/PT. The Bred-By Exhibitor groups, Junior Showmanship Finals, Best Miscellaneous, agility and obedience will be taped and available on demand at www.akc.org.

Conformation Schedule: All Sporting, Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting Breeds and Junior Showmanship Competition will be Judged on Saturday. All Working, Terrier, Herding Breeds, Miscellaneous and Best in Show will be Judged on Sunday.

If you’re going to be at the show, look for me. I’m a little taller than the average woman, heavy, and blonde. My photographer son is very tall and African American, so we make a pretty identifiable couple.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Breeds You Don’t See Everyday

Last week, I featured the new breeds being shown at this week’s AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin. There are also dogs being shown who have not yet been placed in one of the traditional seven breed groups (Toy, Terrier, Working, Sporting, Non-Sporting, Herding, and Hound). These dogs are in a group known as the Miscellaneous Group. Continue reading Breeds You Don’t See Everyday
