The Dog Lady at home (with Cooper!)
The Dog Lady at home (with Cooper!)
The Dog Lady is off today – she’s making her way to New York City for the big Westminster Dog Show. Her schedule includes Saturday at the Agility competition, with a stop by the AKC Meet the Breeds event. Monday and Tuesday will be jam-packed with conformation showing, starting with the breed competitions at 8:30 am.

If you’re at the show, look for a tall woman with spiked blonde hair and a T-shirt that reads doggies.com. If you won’t make it to Manhattan, check out our Facebook page and our Twitter feed (@TheDogDen) for up-to-the minute reporting. And, of course, she’ll be entering blog posts as fast as her little fingers can type.

Westminster 2015: Who Do You Want to See?

rp_Morty-OK-350x234.jpgI can’t believe it’s nearly here! I leave February 13th for NYC to see this year’s Westminster show – my first time as a member of the 4th estate.

I’ll be attending Agility on Saturday, and will try to fit in a visit to the AKC Meet the Breeds event. Then, of course, I’ll go to the preliminary breed judging during the daytime on the 16th & 17th, before attending group judging and best in show both of those evenings.

So, I’m open to suggestions – what do you most want to hear about? I’ll take as many pictures as I can, but you know I’m not a great photographer, so we’ll have to see how those turn out.

Who’s got a favorite breed they want me to cover from beginning to end? You all know I’m partial to Beagles and Vizslas, so you’ll surely be seeing lots of them, but in two days I’m sure I can follow some other breeds, as well.

Let me know via your comments below.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Animal Planet Gears Up for the Super Bowl

I just love watching Animal Planet while I wait for the Super Bowl to start. I knew the 11th Annual Puppy Bowl would be on this afternoon, but I was flipping through channels this morning and came upon another show that I hope will be an annual competition for them.

The show was called America’s Cutest Dogs, and it was a compilation of cute dog videos from the Internet. My favorite one is shown here, but it didn’t even place among the finalists.

2014 AKC / Eukanuba National Championships

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship (AENC) returns December 13-14, 2014 to Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center. Already one of the world’s premiere dog events, the 2014 event will offer all-breed competitions, specialty competitions and special attractions, breeder seminars, the AKC Agility Invitational and AKC Obedience Classic, junior events, consumer attractions and of course the crowning of a new National Champion.

The event is one of the most highly competitive and exciting events in the canine world. Every year, thousands of the world’s top canine competitors from all 50 states and more than 70 countries vie for Best in Show honors.

Each year the show is held in conjunction with the AKC Obedience Classic and AKC Agility Invitational , representing the culmination of a year of competition in three AKC sports: Conformation, Obedience and Agility. More than 4,100 dogs are expected to compete!

Conformation judging starts at 8 am Saturday with the Bulldogs. You can download a complete schedule if you want to find your favorite breed. Click here, then click on the judging program at the bottom of the page.

Schedules for the events other than conformation can be found here.

One of the most exciting attractions is the AKC Meet the Breeds with over 150 AKC breeds on display for the public to meet and speak with breed experts. The AKC Demonstration ring features fun, educational and exciting demonstrations such as herding with live ducks, agility, obedience and seeing-eye dogs.

Can’t be there in person? Check out their interactive live-stream of the events, starting at 6 pm each day.

I have a few things to do this weekend, but will try to post results as I have time.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Nathan: Best in Show, National Dog Show, 2014

Wow! It’s been quite an autumn for Nathan. Not only did he win Best in Show at the National Dog Show in Philadelphia, he also became a daddy in October! He sired a litter to GCH. Flessner’s Pursuit of Perfection that includes 5 boys and 6 girls! All are black and tan and are pictured on the breeders’ puppy page.

Dear NBC:

An open letter to NBC and the people they hire to announce the National Dog Show:

I love watching the show every year on Thanksgiving. It’s become a great tradition at my house. But can I offer a suggestion?

Would it be too much to ask that the announcers NOT talk while the winners are being announced? As soon as the judge announces the best in group, the announcers start yammering so we can’t hear the rest of the results. You have 2 hours to fill. Surely, you can take a break for the eight minutes it takes to announce the full block of winners in each group and the Best in Show.

I’d also love to see more of the show. Cutting it to two hours just really isn’t doing the show justice!

Just my two cents worth,
