Top Ten Westminster 2014 FAQs

Nope, it’s not Tuesday, but I needed to get this Top Ten list up in time for people to prepare for the upcoming granddaddy of all dog shows, the 2014 Westminster Kennel Club All-Breed Show.

You can catch the Finals of the Masters Agility Championship on Fox Sports 1 from 7 – 9 pm ET on Saturday, February 8th. The conformation show is on CNBC Monday, February 7th from 8 – 11 pm ET and on USA Network on Tuesday, February 8th from 8 – 11 pm ET.

If your television is glued to the Olympics, check back here often. I’ll be live-blogging both events – a little during the day, but a lot during the evening.

Here are the answers to some of the questions you might have about dog shows in general and Westminster in particular.

2014 Westminster Agility Course

shutterstock_174662624I had planned on spending today live-blogging the agility event at this year’s inaugural Westminster Masters Agility Competition. Imagine my surprise when I learned they are not streaming any of the event online or through their mobile app nor are they posting preliminary results on their site. Grrrrrr.

I will bring you what news I can, whenever I can, and I will definitely post tonight during the televised portion of the competition – the finals.

For now, you can download the running order if you have friends who are competing, and you can see a layout of the various courses here.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

My Picks For The 2014 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

SloopyI consulted several different sources to compile my list this year – trying to make this into a science, but it is, of course, an art. I started with the odds compiled by Wynn Las Vegas, although that ended up being the least important factor I considered. Then I looked at which breeds had won Westminster most often, also pretty much of a dead end for me.

Next, I looked at the number of dogs entered in each breed and group, and how many times each had won. To some extent, this is a reflection of the popularity of each breed, but to me, although this hasn’t proven true historically, a breed that has many entries will have a better chance of producing a truly best example of the breed standard. If the judge has more specimens to choose from, he or she will be better able to find a more exemplary dog.

I used these figures to choose my breed for each group, then looked at the list of invitees for each group. The invitees are the five top-ranked dogs in each breed, who are automatically invited to Westminster each year. The rest of the entries are those sent in to ask for a slot, but the top five are actually invited to the show.

From there, I have to admit, I just looked at the names. I picked the dog whose name I liked best. Like I said, it’s an art.

Enough already, right? Here’s my list:

More News from Westminster

From the Westminster Kennel Club: news about next month’s show.

Westminster’s 138th show, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 10-11, drew an entry of 2,845 as America’s Dog Show extends its standing as the second-longest continuously-held sporting event in this country, a streak that began in 1877.

There are entries in 187 breeds and varieties eligible for this year’s show. Labrador Retrievers, coincidentally the most-registered AKC breed every year since 1991, leads the way with 76 entries, followed by Golden Retrievers (58), French Bulldogs (52), Rhodesian Ridgebacks (46), and Australian Shepherds (44). In breeds that combine three varieties, Dachshunds have 62 entries and Poodles 42.
