Dog Flu in Chicago is a New Strain in the US
One week ago, I posted a story about a dog flu outbreak in Chicago. Vets have now identified the flu strain and say it has never before been seen in the US. It came to us from Korea and China, according to reporting from NBC News’ Chicago affiliate. Continue reading Dog Flu in Chicago is a New Strain in the US

Update on Carmen, the hero dog
According to the Cincinnati Care Center, Carmen continues to improve. She has not needed to go back on the ventilator and is eating well. They’ve even gotten her up and about for a short therapy session. Love, love, LOVE that they are posting people’s messages on her kennel walls so she knows how much everyone is pulling for her. Check out all the pictures on the Center’s Facebook page. #HopeForCarmen
Here’s what her family has to say about her amazing progress:
Carmen is still doing well. Today she started Physical Therapy and she’s working on being able to stand up on her own again, among other things. Because she’s fully awake and alert, our visits are short. We want her to save her energy for PT. It’s exciting to see her recognize us, try to greet us and give us expressions that show her personality shining through once again. We’re still focused on one day at a time, though with each day that she continues to improve we have more hope that we will see her come home.
Our family continues to be amazed at the amount of donations, support, thoughts and prayers being said for our family and Carmen. We are still trying to find the right words to truly express our appreciation. Thank you, everyone, for your generosity. It is because of your generosity that we can concentrate on providing Carmen with the best care. Thank you!
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
Heroic Dog Improving After Trying to Save Friend from SW Ohio Home Fire
Have you been following the story of Carmen? Named after the Ohio State Alma Mater (Carmen, Ohio), this beautiful Boxer lay on her friend, Ben’s face, trying valiantly to protect him from a house fire. Although he was pulled from the house alive, Ben succumbed to his injuries and was buried today.
Carmen, on the other hand, was removed from her ventilator and appears to be doing as well as can be expected. You can follow along as Carmen recovers on the Cincinnati Care Center’s Facebook page.
People from around the world have seen the story and are praying for Carmen. They have committed over $18,000 toward the $25,000 fundraising goal to pay for Carmen’s care on the Crowdrise crowd funding site.
The video above is from right after the fire, but the family has posted an update this evening: Family & Carmen Update 2/10/2015: Today we laid Ben to rest. It was by far the hardest thing our family has ever had to do, though our spirits were lifted when we got an update on Carmen…. We’re thrilled to share that she’s improving! She was taken off the ventilator today and currently breathing on her own. As she comes out off the anesthesia, she’s awake, aware and even moving around a bit. It was good to see her recognize the family and respond to our voices.
While we’re not out of the woods yet and there is still significant care that she needs, her chances of survival have increased. We’re hopeful that we will actually be able to take her home one day. Ben’s brother, Philip, will be taking Carmen home if we get there, though she will continue to have the love and care of the entire Ledford Family.
Carmen – you are such a good dog! All of us here at doggies.com and breeders.net wish you a speedy recovery.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

3-D Printer Gives Dog New Paws
I have read other articles about 3-D printing, and this new technology absolutely blows me away! First, you have to throw out everything you think you know about printing…such as that it involves only paper and printing.

Urgent request for funding for knee surgery for Army dog Buddy
Buddy is a ten year-old Lab who got a second chance on life when he was adopted by Maureen, a career Army officer with more than 20 years of service to our country. Buddy has always been an Army dog, but his previous family got reassigned to Germany and were unable to take him.
We think this picture of Buddy and his new Army mom says it all.
Just 3 days after coming home, Buddy was playing with a new ball when he tore his cruciate ligament, an injury seen in older labs.
Buddy has an excellent prognosis and is scheduled for surgery on Saturday, October 25. It cannot wait.
Maureen shares what Buddy means to her family:
“He’s a good dog who has stolen the hearts of me and my children. As challenging as this is for me to deal with, I know that it was meant to be. This injury was inevitable and had it happened prior to Monday, Buddy might not have ever been adopted. The thought breaks my heart.”
We’re working with Pet Chance to fund Buddy’s urgent surgery; monies raised will go directly to the treating veterinarian.

On behalf of this military family, we thank you!
