Breast Cancer Awareness

shutterstock_118843015As you probably already know, October is breast cancer awareness month. Although sometimes I think I will go nuts if I see one more display of pink, (in the NFL? Really?) it’s worth noting that breast cancers strikes dogs, too.

What’s one of the most important ways to prevent breast cancer in dogs? Spay your pet! Spaying a dog before she goes into heat just about removes the risk that she will develop breast cancer because the source of estrogen is removed from the body. Estrogen feeds tumor cells and makes cancer more likely.

So, spay your pet, wear pink, and enjoy October!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

#SaveTheWhiteDog

If you’re following this hashtag on Twitter, you already know the story. If not, you’ll want to watch this video. The LA Times and KTLA are reporting on a small white dog, who we have since found out is named Gordo, was hit by a van being chased by the highway patrol.

The video is not overly gory, but it does show the dog being hit. Gordo was rushed to an emergency vet and is now recovering nicely, although he did lose a leg.

The video is on its way to going viral, as is the hashtag #SaveTheWhiteDog. A donation fund has been set up. If you’d like to contribute, please visit Access Animal Hospitals‘ site.

Doggies.com extends our best wishes to Gordo for a speedy recovery! Feel better soon little guy. Your Daddy misses you!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Saturday Survey: Eye Health Registry Services

If you’ve been following along this week, you know that the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF), which has been the leader in verifying and certifying purebred eye health for the past 30 years, has recently closed its doors. All CERF records are being transferred to OFA, the organization which has (also for decades) been the leader in verifying and certifying purebred hip health.

This seems like a very big deal to me, so I’m interested to know: do any of you use these two registries?

Updated: FAQs regarding the conversion from CERF to OFA for eye exams

From the OFA website:

Is the OFA Eye Certification Registry (ECR) replacing CERF? Is CERF going away?

The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) designated the OFA’s Eye Certification Registry as their endorsed registry as of November 1, 2012, and in the first 18 months the OFA has successfully processed over 32,000 applications. ACVO diplomates (veterinary ophthalmologists) receive regular quantities of the OFA eye examination forms, and the ACVO is encouraging their use and registration of results with the OFA going forward.
UPDATE – On May 28, 2014 CERF announced that they will be closing effective June 15, 2014.

From the CNN iReport, which brings us good news: Christina Summitt works three jobs, trying to support her three step-children, as well as her work in dog rescue. Her own dog, Tucker, a Great Dane-Black Lab mix, is never far from her thoughts. He recently swallowed a plastic ball, and she knew he’d need surgery to remove it, but the estimated cost was $2,700.
