October is National Pet Safety Month

Brown dog's leg is wrapped in a bandage. Broken paw, painful stare.
Who knew this month we were supposed to focus on pet safety? The good folks at American Family Insurance not only reminded us to celebrate, they also provided a list of items responsible pet families will keep on hand in a pet first aid kit. If you already have a pet first aid kit, use this list as a checklist to see what you may need to replenish. If you don’t, you can use this as a shopping list next time you go to the drug store. Dog Flu in NE Ohio

From Fox 8 News: A new strain of dog flu, known as H3N2, is rearing its ugly head in Northeastern Ohio. It’s highly contagious and potentially fatal. The strain was first identified in 2015 in Chicago and has been slowly spreading across the country.

Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, lack of appetite and vomiting. Check with your local vet to see if it has reached your area yet. If it has, you’d be well advised to keep your dog away from the dog park or doggie day care until the danger has passed.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Eye Damage from Eclipse

Solar eclipse

Many people have been talking about the damage your eyes can sustain from looking at the eclipse on Monday, but something I hadn’t thought about was my dog’s eyes.

It’s probably a good idea to keep your animals indoors during the eclipse. When it is at its peak, it will get fairly dark out, and your dog may be tempted to look up. If he or she happens to look at the sun directly, it’s entirely possible he or she could be blinded.

For the two-leggers in your family, check out this handy and easy to make eclipse viewer. I can remember my dad doing something similar with a cardboard box when we were little.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Yes, Narcan does work for dogs

Narcan, the nasal spray that blocks opioid receptors in the brain and revives overdose victims, has become somewhat controversial as people question giving addicts several chances at escaping death when they refuse to get help with their recovery. Some municipalities are requiring those who are given the life-saving drug to perform community service in payment for the dose they receive from first responders.

Fortunately, the sheriff department in York County, Maine, didn’t give it a second thought when Addie, a mere dog, accidentally overdosed after fishing some oxycontin out of a purse in her home. Continue reading Yes, Narcan does work for dogs
