I had to say goodbye this morning to the best dog I’ve ever known. The vet is guessing, but thinks Cooper developed a tumor on his spleen, which then tore open one or more blood vessels. He lost more than half of his blood volume in 24 hours, to the point where it took three sticks just to find a vein to euthanize him. He was 11 and dearly loved.
I’m heartbroken, but know he is now in a better place with no pain, playing with his sisters we have lost in the past.
Rest in peace, good friend. I’ll be looking for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

All the ghouls and goblins will likely be out this weekend, and here are some great safety pointers to help your dog stay sane during the celebrations, from the Facebook page of American Pet Professionals.
From Tulp Films, Maxime-Claude L’Écuyer shares the story of Mathieu as he grapples with the ultimate decision: to end the life of his faithful companion, Suki.
All of us will one day have to make this decision. It’s well worth the 12 minutes it takes to watch.
I found this on Facebook – not sure what the original source is, but I know my vet has at one time or another recommended most of these for my dogs.
You should always check with your vet before giving any medication to your dog because you never know what might interact with what, but it’s good to know you don’t have to spend extra money on dog-specific medications if you already stock these common over-the-counter remedies.
I am in love with the vet shows on Animal Planet. My typical Saturday involves watching the reruns all day, then catching the original episodes at night.
I know they show some non-pet related stuff, too, like River Monsters, North Woods Law, and Treehouse Masters (which I can’t figure out how that relates to animals), but my favorites are the ones that show vets. How about you?
President Obama signed the revised Toxic Substances Control Act yesterday, updating a 40-year old law. What’s that got to do with dogs and other animals? Actually, it’s vitally important to animal welfare, and here’s why. Continue reading Obama Signs Toxic Substances Control Act Revision→
The temperature near Phoenix Monday was 117 degrees, so naturally Ismael Ochoa thought it would be a great day to leave his dogs outside with no shade and no water. The dogs were chained to a fence on Ochoa’s property where one died and three others were taken by authorities, suffering from heat exhaustion. A neighbor tried to help, but could not resuscitate the deceased dog after he collapsed. Continue reading Chained to a Fence, Arizona Dog Dies of Heat Exhaustion→
As a public service, following yesterday’s post, I wanted to re-post this chart that shows how hot your car gets in a matter of just a few minutes. NEVER EVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A HOT CAR!
In the course of my travels this month, I met a man named Tim who has a Great Dane puppy in need of surgery. The little girl, named Bijou, has Persistent Right Aortic Arch and Megaesopagus, which means she has a very hard time eating. Tim has to grind up her kibble, add water, then spoon-feed her four times a day. Without surgery, the dog will likely succumb to pneumonia at some point. Tim recently lost his previous Great Dane at 9-years young. Continue reading Will You Help Great Dane Puppy Bijou Get Her Life-Changing Surgery?→
