I can totally see my dogs doing this.
Happy weekend!

After their family dog died last year, Josh Breaux of Pierre Part, Louisiana, wanted to hang out with a dog in the worst way. Although his mother had taught him not to go onto other people’s property, the neighbor’s surveillance video caught Josh sneaking into their garage to give their dog, Duchess, a hug. So sweet!

My cousin Ginger’s experience today with a stray:
So I got in my car and drove to the Decker’s to put some gas in my car. As I was on the way there, I looked in the mirror and I saw my stray Girl dog running and following me.
I immediately slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road. She came to me wagging happily. I opened the door and put her in back seat.

I have a friend who takes his dock-diving champion dog Thor to local elementary schools every week to help kids learn to read without the fear of a listener making fun of them when they stumble over words. One of his students told him that she brought her reading grade from a D to a B since reading to Thor.
Recently, the ASPCA’s ProBlog ran a feature on this topic. Here’s what they had to say: Continue reading Programs that encourage kids to read to animals
Reader Alan Karch shared this beautiful piece with me. He wrote it to his wife after their wonderful dog, Beamer, died. It was so moving, I got permission to publish it so all of you can read it. I think it perfectly captures the joy of having a dog in the family, as well as the heartache when they cross the rainbow bridge. Continue reading An Ode to Beamer’s Mom
I liked the video of the dog who stole the chicken nuggets from the toaster oven. My dogs aren’t quite that creative, but they do like to take dirty dishes out of the sink to “clean” them off for us. How about your dog?

I posted a video yesterday of dogs getting onto counters and into garbage cans. We have a baby gate across the kitchen door, but it’s not always shut, so we also turn our garbage can around so that the opening faces the wall. For the most part, this keeps the dogs out of the trash, but I still have issues with them taking dirty dishes out of the sink to “clean” them. If only they’d put them back when they were done! I also have quite a collection of bread, donuts, and other food on top of my refrigerator that maybe other people would leave on the sideboard.
What measures do you have to take to keep your dogs out of the trash and off of your kitchen counters?

As compiled by the American Kennel Club:
Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd lives for his job, which still involves herding livestock and working as an all-purpose farm and ranch dog. He needs a lot of activity and a sense of purpose to be truly content. Due to the breed’s intelligence and versatility, “Aussies” also excel in AKC events such as agility, obedience and herding.

Are you a responsible dog walker? By that, I mean do you pick up your dog’s poop? If not, you may be contributing not only to your neighbor’s blood pressure problem, but also to a serious water contamination problem.
