Do any of you watch the Bonnie Hunt Show? I’m not so much into talk shows, but I have become hooked on this one since I’ve been home recovering from my surgery. One of the things I most love about it is that she is such a dog lover! As you saw from yesterday’s post, she apparently searches the Internet for dog-related video clips to air on her show. Yesterday, the clip showed dogs playing Nerf basketball – too cute! The best part was the cat lying right under the basket – “No defense at all,” Bonnie says, as the cat sleeps through the whole thing. (Still looking for the clip on YouTube so I can post a link for you.)

Saturday Survey: Do You Donate to Dog Shelters?
Last week’s survey about adopting from dog shelters drew our biggest response ever, so I had to ask the follow-up question: Do you donate to dog shelters? Since so many of you say you adopt, I’m curious as to the payback ratio!

Fire at Dog Rescue Shelter
Received this today from Cynthia Sharpley about a fire at a rescue home in Mississippi. Sure sounds like they could use our help!
Homes Needed for 75 Maryland Dogs
I find this truly hard to believe. A man in Frederick County, MD, asked his friend to “watch” his 75 (yes, that’s right, 75!) dogs, then took off.
Be on the Lookout for Abandoned & Neglected Dogs
Those of you who read this blog regularly may remember that I work for a major Midwestern US electric utility. They made me so proud today, I had to share it with you!

PetSmart Adoption Weekend
If you are looking to add a new furry friend to your family soon, why not go to PetSmart this weekend. They are sponsoring A Second Chance for Love adoption weekend February 13 -15, 2009 at all of their stores, in cooperation with Hills brand dog foods. The goal is to find homes for 13,500 pets in need. They suggest you call your local store to check on what times the adoption agencies will be in each store.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
How are dogs euthanized in your state?
Not a topic we like to think about, but we all know that dogs are put down when shelters become over-crowded. Do you have any idea how your state carries out the euthanasia? In North Carolina, apparently, they use a gas chamber, which brings to my mind Nazi Germany’s death camps. Not terribly humane, and apparently, not always effective, as this beautiful little puppy was pulled alive from the shelter’s garbage can.

Update on the Obamas’ Dog Choices
Apparently, the Obamas have narrowed their choices for a new first dog to either a Labradoodle (shown above, on the chair) or a Portuguese Water Dog (shown above, on the lawn).
Everyone has an opinion on which they should choose. Even Senator Edward Kennedy, who lives with three Portuguese water dogs, released a statement advocating the breed after President-elect Obama announced his family had narrowed its choice down to just two breeds.
Many people have expressed concern that neither of these breeds is likely to be found in a shelter. Not so for Labradoodles, says Stephanie Shain, of the Humane Society of the United States. “Sadly, every time (and I mean EVERY time) we see a kind of dog become suddenly popular we see a huge growth in the production of those animals in puppy mills (mass breeding operations – awful places), a huge increase in the number of people buying them, and a spike in the number of that kind of dog in shelters and resuces.
It happened decades ago to Cocker Spaniels (circa lady and the Tramp) and more recently with Dalmatians (101 of course).
Labradoodles came on the scene a few years ago. Shelters are likely to classify them as a “poodle mix”, not necessarily a “Labradoodle”, although some will mark them as such.
They are out there in need of homes…loads of them. ”
See the rest of Ms. Shain’s comments here, in a transcript of an online public chat held on January 15th.
And don’t forget to vote for name here.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
