Another Overflowing Shelter

I shared several days ago two shelters who were overflowing due to specific situations of hoarding. Now WFAA reports the Ft. Worth shelter is bulging at the seams, but it’s due to too many people voluntarily surrendering their animals because they can’t keep them anymore. So many people, they actually had a line, processing as many as 99 new intakes a day at one point. Continue reading Another Overflowing Shelter

And this is why we say “no puppies under the tree”

From WLWT, the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati, this video speaks to the increase in the number of shelter pets that occurs right after Christmas, when dogs don’t meet the expectations of their new families. Or they pee on the floor. Or they chew up a shoe. Or they get in the garbage.

People need to do their research and make their own decisions about pets – that’s why they make terrible gifts.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

A Mega Deal for a Friend

PetulaFrom the Facebook page of my friend, Jamiley: Before today I had never been in the pound. Never been to the Humane Society either. I don’t know how people that work in these places do it every day. It ripped my heart out to see dogs “stuck” in cages. When the guy helping us opened up Petula’s cage all the other dogs started barking because they wanted out too. And every single one of them had something about it you could just fall in love with. I wish I could’ve chosen them all. Continue reading A Mega Deal for a Friend

Ohio Names Shelter Animals Official State Pet

Animal Shelter KennelI’m proud of my home state of Ohio. The Ohio House voted with a 78-0 vote on SB 86 which includes language sponsored by state Representative Laura Lanese:

“A shelter pet is hereby designated as the official pet of the state to raise public awareness of shelter animals.”

The measure still needs to pass the state Senate and be signed by the Governor, but it’s a start!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Major Biden

Major BidenThe Delaware Humane Association is pleased to announce the adoption of Major by Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill. The couple fell in love with the dog after fostering him in their home.

According to the Delaware Humane Association Facebook page, “Major was 1 of 6 puppies who were brought to DHA after coming in contact with something toxic in their home. Their original owner was unable to afford veterinary care so they surrendered. With the help of our friends at VSCD, together we provided lifesaving care, shared their story here and that we were looking for fosters for them. Joe Biden caught wind of them and the rest is history!”

What a great start to the holiday season!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month

Happy Elderly DogPetfinder.com is celebrating November as Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month.

“Think of a pet that is already trained and doesn’t chew or scratch everything in sight — a pet who will love you unconditionally,” said Kim Saunders, Petfinder.com’s Vice President of Shelter Outreach and Public Relations. “That’s what you get when you adopt a senior pet.” Continue reading November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month
