News from my hometown of Cincinnati: A Rumpke Waste & Recycling driver is a hero after saving a puppy Wednesday morning in Colerain Township just outside Cincinnati.

Rumpke Driver Aaron Kinsel was servicing customers when he noticed a discarded backpack along the roadway. After additional observation, he noticed the bag was moving, so he got out of the truck to investigate. Inside the bag he found a distraught 10-week old puppy.

The female, Boxer-mix is being treated at a local veterinarian’s office. She is suffering from dehydration and a broken leg. Continue reading Abandoned Puppy Found by Rumpke Driver

I was wrong!

I told you a few days ago that I was following The First Dogs on Twitter, which I thought was some sort of official account set up for Champ and Major. I should have known that the people in the White House had better things to do than to curate a Twitter account about the dogs. There is no ‘official” account for the dogs or for the coming First Cat at this time. Everything you see on Twitter currently (and there are several accounts) are fan pages.

It does appear that @FLOTUS will ocassionally tweet about the dogs.

I regret spreading misinformation.

Shelter Sunday: Honey AKA Kia / Canine Castaways Rescue / Fountaintown, IN

Honey Kia IN

Meet Honey, also known as Kia. This beautiful adult Boxer is house-trained and prefers a home without kids, cats, or other dogs. Here’s what her rescuers have to say about her:

Honey! What a perfect name for such a sweet soulful girl. Honey is only 4-5yrs old. Recently pulled from IACS and in a foster home til she gets her furever home and family. She is a velcro boxer. Just loves being near her human and getting all the loving she so deserves. She needs a calmer loving home; prefer no other pets. Loves all people, house trained and to be your side kick on all outings and adventures. If you are searching for a constant companion and shadow to follow you then look no further!

Honey is currently a guest at Canine Castaways Rescue in Fountaintown, Indiana (near Indianapolis). If you’re lucky enough to be nearby, why not contact the shelter to learn more about Honey and all of her friends. Call (317) 345-6578, send an email to

Saturday Survey: Iditarod

rp_Saturday-Survey-Graphic-350x2331-350x233-350x233-350x2331-350x233-350x233-350x233-350x233-350x233-350x233.jpg

Exxon Mobile just announced they are pulling their sponsorship of the Iditarod after this year, citing the economic state of the world right now. PETA is applauding this as an animal rights victory. Race officials, meanwhile, cite the number of volunteer veterinarians who attend to the dogs throughout their journey.

My humble opinion, formed by watching the race from afar, is that the dogs appear to be having a great deal of fun.

What say you?

There’s not a blue check of authenticity yet, but I believe the place to go for tweets from Champ and Major Biden is @TheFirstDogs. Rumor has it they are not at the White House yet; they’re waiting for everything to calm down a bit.

There’s also an account for @TheFirstCatUS, for the promised rescue cat.

Can’t wait to start seeing what’s on the minds of all the first pets. No word on who is helping them with the typing. It’s tough to tweet when you don’t have thumbs!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
