From the Washington Post: If you’ve ever rescued a dog or adopted from a shelter, you may have had lots of questions about where the dog came from or why s/he has an odd behavior or two. Conversely, if you’ve had to rehome your dog, you may wonder how things turned out. Now there’s a way to find out. Continue reading What’s My Rescue Dog’s History?
On my list to try next. I like the idea that they’re recyclable. Has anyone tried them?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Want to know the best way to prevent mammary cancer in your dog? SPAY HER. Mammary cancers are extremely rare in dogs who have been spayed. So in addition to preventing unwanted litters, spaying could save your dog’s life.
It used to be that vets recommended spaying early, before the dog goes into heat, but current thinking is that the ovarian hormones are important in bone and joint development, so they recommend waiting until 8 – 12 months, as long as the dog is in a secure environment where pregnancy is unlikely.
Whether you spay early or later, the cancer protection is worth the cost of the surgery.

Meet Preacher! This handsome fella is a Mastiff / Cane Corso mix who is house-trained and said to be good with dogs, cats, and children. Here’s what is known about Preacher:
Preacher is all love! He’s a big boy, so needs a strong handler, and would be best with bigger kids. He’s wonderful on the leash & knows basic commands.
Preacher is currently a guest of Mountain Girl Rescue in Flagstaff, Arizona. If you’re lucky enough to be in the great state of Arizona, why not contact Mountain Girl Rescue at [email protected] or (928) 699-1320 so you can ask about Preacher and all of his friends. Visit their Facebook Page.

The American Kennel Club originally launched AKC PupPals for kids in need of uplifting with a message from a canine friend. In light of the crisis California is facing right now, they thought it was fitting to expand the program to cater to anyone in need of some cheer – medical professionals (HEROES), nursing home and hospital patients, and anyone else impacted by the California wildfires. They hope that this can help them smile a bit.
Anyone can nominate a person to receive a letter or video from a canine companion.
They have received over 500 requests fulfilled and are happy to do more.
