From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The American Kennel Club is pleased to announce the launch of its exciting new Virtual Home Manners (VHM) Program. The program is designed to help teach dogs proper manners at home. Teaching their dogs to behave at home is important for owners, mentally stimulating for dogs, and home-based training can take place any time that fits into the schedule of the dog owner. The program will include two levels allowing puppies and dogs of all ages to participate.
“Many companion dogs have been added to families during the pandemic. Basic training for practical home manners should start as soon as we bring a puppy home,” said Doug Ljungren, Vice President of Sports and Events. “By providing home manners training, we lay the foundation for well-behaved dogs who are a joy for their families.” Continue reading AKC LAUNCHES NEW VIRTUAL HOME MANNERS TITLING PROGRAM→

As you may recall, National Coffee Day was this week, and we talked about how dangerous it is to give caffeine to a dog. Which doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy Starbucks with you; you just have to be smart about what you get for them.
Many of us take our dogs out for car rides, and car rides often include a stop at a drive-through. Do you indulge your dog when you’re there?
Dr. Evan Antin (named Sexiest Veterinarian Alive by People magazine) joins co-host Susan Lucci and Kathie Lee Gifford on National Puppy Day to explain everything you need to know before adopting a new furry friend. He brings along some sweet pups that are just waiting for some snuggles! (From 2017.)
1. Prepare by purchasing the things you need before you bring the dog home. Reduce your stress by having the bowls, leash, toys, crate, bed, and other necessities before the dog ever gets there, which will help ease the dog’s stress as well. Continue reading Easing the Adoption Transition→
For many, that morning cup of coffee is an absolute necessity, so I hope you are enjoying a free cup today from one of the many retailers offering that perk.
However, please remember that caffeine is toxic to your dog. Even decaf can cause some stomach upset.
Although there are a few brands of “dog coffee”, they are really more of a collection of herbs that just look like coffee.
It’s much better to stick with the occasional “puppuccino” cup of whipped cream if you want your dog to enjoy your Starbucks with you.
Meet Chica! Chica, a young Husky mix, had her babies and was an excellent mother. Now she’s ready to find a home of her own. She’s a beautiful husky, very shy and sweet, just overall a beautiful soul. She is house trained and good with other dogs and children. She is currently in the care of Loving Companions Animal Rescue in North Pole, Alaska.
If you live near the North Pole, first of all, put in a good word for us with Santa. Then go meet Chica and all of her friends.
A recent survey from SimpleTexting found that of 1,000 people surveyed, 400 would rather give up their dog for a month than give up their SmartPhone for the same amount of time. IMHO, that’s crazy! What say you?
