For the first time, Westminster has loosened its entry rules. In prior years, every dog had to have been designated as a Champion before being allowed to enter.
This year, you’ll notice some of the dogs don’t carry this moniker. As long as a dog has won at least one major competition, he or she is allowed to enter. These are called “class dogs”. This new rule allows younger dogs to enter the competition, presumably giving their owners more time to use the dog in breeding after a successful show.
Although the vast majority of entrants have earned at least Champion status, if not Grand Champion, a few of the class dogs won their breed competition today:

A lot of people think the toy dogs make good fashion accessories, but the truth is these little animals are independent beings.
Although small dogs are not my thing, I do love watching them at Westminster because their little feet have to scurry so fast when they parade around the ring. So cute!
Just had to let you know that Cooper just now realized there are dogs on TV (halfway through the Toy group). He’s pretty tired because we had company this afternoon that interrupted his nap, but he’s sleeping with one eye open so he doesn’t miss any of the show.

For the first time in the history of the broadcast, they are carrying the singing of the National Anthem. And it’s by a classy tenor! Not some aging pop star who has to “adapt” the song and make it their own. Very nice!
Did he really say “by the dog’s early light”?
I’m so excited! I’m 2 for 4 going into tonight’s group judging. Although my Peke and German Shepherd picks got beaten in the first round, my American Foxhound (Ch Kiarry’s Pandora’s Box) and my Bulldog (GCH Itsa Brix) won in their respective breed rings.

Live television coverage of the Best in Group judging is on CNBC tonight from 8 – 11 pm on the East Coast, and I’ll post the winner of each group as soon as they’re announced. Tonight, we’ll see the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding groups. Tomorrow (same time, but on USA Network) the Sporting, Terrier, and Working groups will be shown, followed by Best in Show judging.

So, let’s say you decide you want to make a big splash in the world of dog shows. What breed should you plan on showing? Here’s our list of the breeds that have won Best in Show the most times since the show began awarding the prize in 1907.
Useless trivia fact of the day: No Best in Show was awarded in 1923 due to rules changes that didn’t allow for breeds to compete against each other.
1. The best of the best is certainly the Wire Fox Terrier, having captured 13 Best in Shows. If you include the Smooth variety of Fox Terrier, the total rises to 17.
2. If you count all of the sizes of Poodle as one breed, they fall in at number two, with 9 wins. Four for the Standard size, three for the miniatures, and two for the toys.
3. Next in line is the Scottish Terrier, winning 8 of the top trophies.
4. The English Springer Spaniel has been distinguished at the top spot six times.
5. Here’s where it gets tricky: no fewer than nine breeds are tied with four wins each. The list includes Airedale Terriers, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, Smooth Fox Terriers, Perkingese, Pointers, Standard Poodles, Sealyham Terriers, and Cocker Spaniels (including Black, ASCOB, and Parti colors).
So, that covers more than 10 breeds.
If you’d rather pick a Group instead of a particular breed, here’s how they stack up:
1. With 44 Best in Show wins, the Terrier Group is clearly the biggest favorite.
2. Sporting dogs come in second, with 22 wins.
3. Next, bring on the Working dogs, who have racked up 15 wins.
4. Coming in fourth, everybody’s favorite pocket pets, the Toy group, with 10 wins.
5. The Non-Sporting group has had 8 wins.
6. My favorite, the Hounds, have won just 5 times.
7. And bringing up the rear, the hard-working Herders have only won once, with a German Shepherd dog in 1987.
