2016 National Championships By The Numbers
The huge dog show known as the AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin is coming up this weekend (December 17 – 18) in Orlando, Florida. The event actually runs all of this week with lots of preliminary rounds and exhibitors starting on December 13th. Yes, there is a conformation show, including 209 different breeds, as well as a Junior Handling Competition. I’ll bring you more information on those tomorrow. But what I want to talk about today is the stuff that goes on outside of the all-breed show rings. Continue reading 2016 National Championships By The Numbers

The Pumi (plural Pumik) is the most recent dog added to the AKC breed list, bringing the total number of recognized breeds to 190. The AKC describes them as energetic, lively, and ready to work. Continue reading New AKC Breed: The Pumi
New AKC Breed: The American Hairless Terrier
The American Hairless Terrier was added to the AKC Terrier Group in early 2016. The American Hairless Terrier Club of America describes the breed as A natural variation of the Rat Terrier, this completely hairless dog (some may have eyebrows and whiskers) is a lively, intelligent and friendly companion that is often the perfect answer for those with allergies. Further, they say The AHT is quite a bit different from most commonly known hairless breeds (such as Chinese Crested, Xolo, etc.). The AHT does NOT have hair anywhere on the body (such as head, feet, tail) and should not have any excess body hair. Continue reading New AKC Breed: The American Hairless Terrier
New AKC Breed: The Sloughi
In preparation for next week’s big National Dog Championships, I’m spending a little time learning about the new breeds recognized by the AKC this year. First up: the Sloughi!
According to the American Sloughi Association, the Sloughi is a rare breed of Arabian sighthound from the north African countries of Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Algeria. It is also known as the Arabian Greyhound. Continue reading New AKC Breed: The Sloughi
The Dog Lady Has a Secret Santa!
I mentioned last week that I really wanted to go to the AKC National Championships in Florida on December 17th and 18th, but didn’t think I could swing it financially.
Turns out, I have a Secret Santa who offered to pay for the whole trip if I would blog about it while I’m there!
That’s a deal I just couldn’t turn down, so pay attention next weekend for coverage of agility, obedience, diving dogs, and of course, the all-breed dog show.
I couldn’t be happier! Thanks, Santa! (Yes, Virginia, he really does exist.)
