The AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin has drawn record entry numbers in its 16th year. An entry of 4,710 dogs will compete for the title of National Champion on December 17 and 18, 2016 in Orlando, Florida. Combined with the other weekend events the AKC Agility Invitational, the AKC Obedience Classic, AKC National Owner-Handler Series Finals, NADD/AKC Diving Dogs Championship, and the Junior events, the overall show totals top 7,000 entries, making this the largest dog show held in the United States since the AKC 1984 Centennial event and the largest dog show North America. Westminster 2016: Master’s Agility

Agility - SlalomThe agility competition finals have started! The first dog, a Portie named Bacco, set a standard for the 20″ class of 42.45 seconds and no faults.

This course is a tough one, as is fitting for the top ten dogs in each height class from today’s all day preliminaries for animals who have already reached a master’s level in the sport. The dogs must go through 2 tunnels, a collapsed chute, an A-frame, a teeter-totter, a suspended tire, and numerous jumps. I get tired just watching!

The sentimental favorite so far? Tokali, a Vizsla who lost a lung in a 2010 Christmas Day accident. He was out there running with the best of them, and is currently in 4th place.

I’ll be live-blogging tonight’s competition, so check back soon if you’re not near your TV or if you don’t get FOX Sports 1 for the winners in each height class.

The schedule:
Masters Agility FOX Sports 1, 8 – 10 pm tonight
Conformation: CNBC 2/15 8 – 11 pm for Hounds, Toys, Non-Sporting, and Herding Dogs
USA 2/16 8 – 11 pm for Sporting, Working, Terriers and the all-important Best in Show

If you’re in Canada, Animal Planet will have the live shows on the 15th and 16th from 8 – 11 pm.

Can’t get to a TV? WKCLive.com will be live-streaming the breed judging from 8 am – 5 pm both Monday and Tuesday. The evening best in group and best in show competitions will also be live-streamed from 8 pm – 11 pm Eastern, with a time-delay on the West Coast so they won’t see it until 8 pm PST.

I can’t find anywhere that will be bringing us the obedience trials. Maybe next year?

As always, I’ll be live blogging both evening events, and I’ll try to post a few things from the agility competition tonight, as well.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

2015 Master’s Agility Champion!

Fox Sports has now posted the winning run at the 2015 Master’s Agility Competition at Westminster from last night. I don’t want to spoil the surprise or anything, but a Border Collie won.

Sorry – couldn’t get the video to embed on here, so you’ll have to follow the link above to watch the video. This dog was pretty amazing!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

Westminster 2015: Who Do You Want to See?

rp_Morty-OK-350x234.jpgI can’t believe it’s nearly here! I leave February 13th for NYC to see this year’s Westminster show – my first time as a member of the 4th estate.

I’ll be attending Agility on Saturday, and will try to fit in a visit to the AKC Meet the Breeds event. Then, of course, I’ll go to the preliminary breed judging during the daytime on the 16th & 17th, before attending group judging and best in show both of those evenings.

So, I’m open to suggestions – what do you most want to hear about? I’ll take as many pictures as I can, but you know I’m not a great photographer, so we’ll have to see how those turn out.

Who’s got a favorite breed they want me to cover from beginning to end? You all know I’m partial to Beagles and Vizslas, so you’ll surely be seeing lots of them, but in two days I’m sure I can follow some other breeds, as well.

Let me know via your comments below.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
