From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The American Kennel Club (AKC®) Education Department is proud to introduce The Canine Corner, a free online newsletter packed with content and resources for teachers in grades K-12.

“We are excited to offer even more resources to help teachers engage students in and out of the classroom,” said Ashley Jacot, Director of Education. “We are committed to helping educators teach responsible dog ownership and the importance of the human-canine bond.”

The Canine Corner is a free subscription service that is delivered monthly. Each online newsletter contains lesson plans, read alouds, and many more activities for teachers, such as a science lesson teaching about force and change in mass using AKC Agility, reading comprehension task cards, and creating line graphs using puppy growth data, among others.

Learn more about the AKC Education Department and its mission.

Sounds like this would be a great resource for home-schoolers, as well.

2021 AKC National Agility Champions

If you missed the big show last night, the AKC has issued a press release publishing the results:

The top Agility dogs in the nation were crowned from an overall combined entry of more than 1,100 dogs this past weekend at the AKC National Agility Championship. Competitions were held March 26-28, 2021 at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex and Central Park Hall at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “After the cancellation of last year’s championship, it was even more exciting to see all the competitors come out this year and show off their honed skills,” said Doug Ljungren, AKC Executive Vice President of Sports and Events. National Agility Championship is Coming Up!

From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The American Kennel Club (AKC) is excited to announce that the AKC National Agility Championship will air on ESPN2. The two-hour competition will be televised on Wednesday, March 31,2021 at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. This broadcast comes on the heels of the three-year agreement the AKC and ESPN signed at the top of the year to give viewers a taste of the competitive world of dog sports.

This year’s AKC National Agility Championship will take place on March 26-March 28, 2021 at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The expo is an indoor, climate-controlled horse arena on dirt and has multiple rings set up for competition. Lab lovers continue to make their voices heard! The American Kennel Club (AKC®) announced at a virtual press conference at the AKC Museum of the Dog that the ever-popular Labrador Retriever is the nation’s favorite dog for the 30th consecutive year.

While the loveable Lab holds firmly to the top spot, the French Bulldog has continued to skyrocket in popularity. The Frenchie landed at number two in 2020, knocking the German Shepherd Dog down to third. The German Shepherd Dog had been the second most popular dog breed since 2009. Virtual Night With The Museum of the Dog

From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The AKC Museum of the Dog is excited to announce “Virtual Night with the Museum,” a livestream virtual gala honoring the Museum’s longtime friend, supporter and board member Ronald H. Menaker on Friday, February 12 between 8pm -9pm.

For almost three decades, the Theatre Benefit for the Museum has been Menaker’s passion project and the Museum hopes to continue the tradition virtually with a night of celebrating and showcasing our love of dogs and the Museum’s impact on the community.

Mr. Menaker first served on the AKC Board from 1996 to 1998. Elected again in 2000, he became Vice Chairman in 2001 and served as Chairman since March 2002 until April 2019. He has been actively involved in the sport of purebred dogs for more than 40 years and has contributed to it greatly through his work with fundraising, particularly hosting the annual Theater Benefit. From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: To celebrate the dogs who do extraordinary things in the service of humankind, the AKC Humane Fund is seeking YOUR nominations for its AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE). Nominations are open now through July 31st and winners will be announced in late 2021. The 2021 Awards for Canine Excellence will be covered on AKC.tv.

Each year, the AKC Humane Fund honors five dedicated, hardworking dogs for making significant contributions to an individual or entire community. Since its creation in 2000, 105 ACE awards have been presented. Former ACE recipients have included a Flat-Coated Retriever that excels at dock diving despite missing a paw and a family pet who fought for his life protecting a seven-year-old from a rattlesnake, among dozens of other remarkable dogs.

“There are countless dogs that touch the hearts of people every day,” said Doug Ljungren, President of the AKC Humane Fund. “These incredible canines impact the lives of individuals and communities across the nation and so many deserve to be recognized with these awards. Biewer Terrier is AKC’s 197th Breed

From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The American Kennel Club (AKC®), the world’s largest purebred dog registry and leading advocate for dogs, announced today that the Biewer Terrier has received full recognition, and is eligible to compete in the Toy Group. This addition brings the number of AKC-recognized breeds to 197.

“We’re thrilled to have the Biewer Terrier join the registry,” said Gina DiNardo, AKC Executive Secretary. “This wonderful little dog makes a great companion for a variety of people, and we’re excited to introduce dog lovers to another fantastic breed that may be a perfect match for their family. As always, we encourage people to do their research to find the right breed for their lifestyle.”

Joining the Toy Group, the Biewer Terrier is a happy-go-lucky dog with a childlike, whimsical attitude. Their purpose is to love and be loved, making them excellent companions. These dogs are loyal and a friend to all they meet. Their long coat requires daily brushing to keep it free of mats. Biewer Terriers are easy going and don’t need a great deal of exercise. Daily walks and playtime will give them the activity they need.

AKC Recognition offers the breed the opportunity to compete at all levels of AKC-sanctioned events. Recognition does not necessarily mean that the breed is a newly created breed. Many of the breeds that gain full AKC-recognition have existed for many years, and some are ancient. To become an AKC-recognized breed there must be an active following and interest in the breed by owners in the U.S. as well as an established breed club of responsible owners and breeders. There also must be a sufficient population of dogs in the United States geographically distributed throughout the county. Breeds working towards full recognition are recorded in AKC’s Foundation Stock Service® (FSS®). Additional information on the process can be found at akc.org.

TOP DOGS CROWNED AT AKC FAST CAT INVITATIONAL

The 2020 AKC Fast CAT Invitational brought together 117 dogs from across the country on December 9-11, 2020 in Orlando, FL in conjunction with the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin. The fastest dogs from each breed, based on rankings from AKC Fast Coursing Ability Tests (Fast CAT), were invited to participate in the inaugural AKC Fast CAT Invitational for the designation of Fastest Dog USA or Speed of the Breeds Champion. All dogs ran three times, with the cumulative speed determining the fastest dogs.

This is the first time I’ve seen this event. How fun! Watching dogs run when they are built for speed is amazing. Loved the Greyhound, Saluki, and Afghan. But even more fun were the tiny dogs with their short legs going so fast they were just a blur!
