From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The American Kennel Club™ (AKC), the largest purebred registry in the world and leading advocate for dogs, lauds the U.S. Department of Transportation [DOT] on the release of a final rule on travel by air with service dogs.
“We are very pleased by the DOT’s strong statement that recognizes the value of properly trained service dogs and the tasks they perform to mitigate an individual’s disability,” said Dennis Sprung, AKC President and CEO. “We also appreciate the clarification that service dogs come in many shapes and sizes, and that no properly trained, working service dog should be denied a flight because of its breed or appearance.” Continue reading AKC Statement on Service Dog Air Travel Ruling→

From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: Which dog is the fastest in the country? The AKC Fast CAT Invitational will answer that question, as the speediest canines gather for this inaugural, invitation-only event. Dogs of all breeds participate year-long, around the country, in AKC Fast Coursing Ability Tests (Fast CAT) – the 100-yard dash for dogs.
Held in conjunction with the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin, the fastest dogs from each breed, based on rankings from AKC Fast CAT Tests, have been invited to participate in Orlando, FL for the designation of Fastest Dog USA or Speed of the Breeds Champion. All dogs will run three times, with the cumulative speed determining the fastest dogs. The third and final round will be held on Friday, December 11th. Dogs will compete in two final divisions: Fastest Dogs USA and the Speed of the Breed Championship. Fastest Dogs USA will be the outright fastest dog according to miles per hour. Speed of the Breed will be determined by the percentage of speed run over the average speed for that breed. Continue reading INAUGURAL AKC FAST CAT INVITATIONAL COMING TO ORLANDO→

The American Kennel Club originally launched AKC PupPals for kids in need of uplifting with a message from a canine friend. In light of the crisis California is facing right now, they thought it was fitting to expand the program to cater to anyone in need of some cheer – medical professionals (HEROES), nursing home and hospital patients, and anyone else impacted by the California wildfires. They hope that this can help them smile a bit.
Anyone can nominate a person to receive a letter or video from a canine companion.
They have received over 500 requests fulfilled and are happy to do more.
From The Dog Lady’s mailbag: The American Kennel Club is pleased to announce the launch of its exciting new Virtual Home Manners (VHM) Program. The program is designed to help teach dogs proper manners at home. Teaching their dogs to behave at home is important for owners, mentally stimulating for dogs, and home-based training can take place any time that fits into the schedule of the dog owner. The program will include two levels allowing puppies and dogs of all ages to participate.
“Many companion dogs have been added to families during the pandemic. Basic training for practical home manners should start as soon as we bring a puppy home,” said Doug Ljungren, Vice President of Sports and Events. “By providing home manners training, we lay the foundation for well-behaved dogs who are a joy for their families.” Continue reading AKC LAUNCHES NEW VIRTUAL HOME MANNERS TITLING PROGRAM→
