All during the month of August, National Dog Month celebrates our loveable canine pals smack in the middle of the dog days of summer. Dogs are the #1 most commonly owned pets on the planet, and with good reason. Did you know that scientific studies prove our pawsome companions make us happier, less stressed, and more optimistic? The list of benefits to spending time with a dog goes on and on, but it all proves one thing––that a month-long celebration of our furry best friends has been a long time coming. National Dog Day

shutterstock_296979872Did you know that today is the 11th annual National Dog Day? According to the official website, millions of people celebrate around the world.

This reminds me of a book I used to read to my son, called “Go, Dog, Go!” It was one of his favorites, and I always remember how happy he’d look when we got to a page near the end where it showed all kinds of dogs wearing party hats. The text read, “It’s a dog party!” It still makes me smile.

Celebrate with your pets

Heads up!  April 18th is National Pet Owner’s Day!  My credo is “Any reason for a party”, so I’m looking forward to it.

How will you celebrate?  I suggest the following:

Take your dog for a long walk.

Play Frisbee at the park with your dog.

Rub your dog’s belly.

Play tug with your dog.

Schedule a long-overdue vet appointment – it’s flea and heartworm season, after all.

Spay or neuter your dog.

Make your own dog treats (recipe below).

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. chicken liver
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 1/2 cups cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup dried milk

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour onto a baking tray and bake at 400 until the sides start to come away from the pan or a knife comes out clean.

Let it cool, cut into pieces and store in fridge!
