Big Happenings at the Stark County Dog Warden’s Office
There’s nothing like being in a room full of dog lovers. That was the scene at the North Canton Public Library yesterday morning when Stark County Dog Warden Jon Barber spoke to a group of concerned residents about changes he’s made over the past year at the Dog Warden’s Office and Shelter. Even the name is new. It used to be the pound.
This event was another in the week-long series called Doggone North Canton, presented by Pawsitive Ohio.
Why should you read on if you’re not in Stark County? Many of the lessons learned here can be applied to your location, making sure more dogs are treated humanely and increasing adoption rates at all facilities.

How hard is it to foster a dog?
Part 2 of Doggone North Canton took place tonight at the North Canton Public Library, where Allegra French of Paws and Prayers gave a short lecture on the rescue group’s foster program. Although different agencies no doubt have different procedures, this will give you some idea of just how easy it can be to bring a foster dog into your home.

Pictures from the North Canton Dog Walk
I posted last week about how thrilled I was with the way the city of North Canton is approaching dog adoption. They’re using a bunch of related community events to call attention to the dogs who need to be adopted from area shelters and rescue organizations. Presented by Pawsitive Ohio, DogGone North Canton runs from August 3rd to August 9th.
Today’s event, the Downtown Dog Walk, was sponsored by the North Canton YMCA, and drew a couple dozen hearty walkers and their pooches, despite the grey skies and a few sprinkles. The event began at Bitzer Park right in the middle of downtown and proceeded down Main Street to Ro’s Custard Creations, where each dog could add back on the calories s/he just burned off with a puppy cone.

Holistic Community-Wide Approach to Pet Adoption
I like the way the city of North Canton, Ohio is approaching the problem of pet overpopulation. In the course of writing this blog for over five years now, I’ve seen lots of different types of adoption events, but I’ve never seen it done in such a holistic, community-wide way.

Introducing Dominic
One of my best friends from high school recently shared pictures of his new dog. This is Dominic, a former racing dog from Tijuana. Congrats to both Nick and Dominic – a match I’m sure was made in heaven!
On another topic, those of you who follow us daily have no doubt noticed there hasn’t been much to see on the doggies.com blog lately. We appreciate your patience as we worked through some technical issues. I’m told all is well now, and we’ll just pick up where we left off.
Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
