Last Minute Request to Rent “Shelter Me” at Redbox

Have you seen the new PBS show called “Shelter Me” yet? It’s being promoted as an “inspiring series that celebrates shelter pets with positive and uplifting stories.”

The real news here is that if you rent a copy of episode 1 from Redbox before Monday night, they will donate the money to Ellen DeGeneres’ Halo Pet Foundation, which will help many shelter pets.

Check it out!

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!

A Shelter Dog Gets Chosen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

I’m not sure who wrote this. I found it on Facebook, and just fell in love with the sweetness of it!

Until next time,
Good day. and good dog!

Shelter Sunday: City of Boston Animal Shelter / Boston, MA

Meet Lil Bit! I chose him because when my aging, feeble mind can’t remember my dogs’ names, I call them Lil Bit, too!

This beautiful dog is being sheltered at the City of Boston Animal Shelter. Here’s what they have to say about him:

He is a long haired chihuahua. Very sweet. 6 months old and 5 pounds of joy. He would love to sit on your lap!

It’s not much, I know, but better than a lot of animal shelters do in describing their pets. (Besides, as small as he is, he doesn’t need a description bigger than he is!)

If you’re going to be near Massachusetts, why not contact the animal shelter and ask to meet Lil Bit and all of his friends. Call 617-635-1800 or 635-1913. (The city’s website is undergoing maintenance right now so I can’t post a link to the shelter, but you should be able to find it by starting at at CityOfBoston.gov) Please note: if you already have a dog in your home, the city of Boston requires that you bring your dog in, so they can evaluate how the two dogs will get along before you bring Lil Bit into your home.

If you’re not in the northeast, check out Petfinder’s Shelter Center for information on adoptable dogs near you.

Until next time,
Good day, and good dog!
