Urgent Adoption Request from Greencastle, IN

From HSPCAnimals.org:

It is with extreme sadness that we announce that the shelter will be closing on September 30, 2011.  We have been instructed that all animals are to be placed by the 30th or be euthanized.

Any animal at the shelter that is already spayed/neutered will be adopted out with a “choose your own adoption fee” special. Those not spayed/neutered will be adopted out with an adoption fee to cover the costs. ALL adopted animals will be s/n before going home. PLEASE help us place these animals!

Between now and the end of September, the shelter will be open Tuesday and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. for adoptions.

Financial donations are still desperately needed to cover costs through the end of the month, in addition to covering debts.

When I checked at PetFinder this morning, there were 5 dogs and 23 cats left in need of a home.  Please help if you can!  Contact info:  765.653.5739 or [email protected]

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Shelter Sunday: Canine Castaways / Arcadia, FL

Meet Petra!  Petra is currently living with Canine Castaways in Arcadia, FL.  I was fascinated by this dog because of her parentage.  Dachshund & Black Lab…really?  I’m just trying to imagine the physics of her conception.  But I digress.  Here’s what Canine Castaway’s website has to say about this beauty.

Shelter Sunday: SafePlace Pets / Colorado Springs, CO

Meet Snuggy!  Snuggy is currently living in a foster home in Colorado Springs, CO.  SafePlace Pets has a rather unique mission, serving not only pets, but people too.  They take in pets whose parents can no longer keep them due to a terminal illness.  What a relief it would be if you found yourself coping with your own impending death and along comes an organization who can take at least one worry off your mind.

Tuesday Top Twelve: Dog Welfare Charities

I posted yesterday about the great work being done by the PetFinder.com Foundation, and it struck me that people might like to have some options that are more local or that are focused on an area other homelessness when they decide where they may donate.

It’s often  tough to decide which charity to support because you want to make sure your money is being used for the purpose you intended.  I consulted Charity Navigator to choose the following twelve charities.  All of these organizations earned four stars from Charity Navigator, the highest score available.

Charities are judged based on their organizational efficiency and their organizational capacity.  The site also provides a list of the accountability policies the charity has, such as whistleblower protection and audited financial data available via their website.  Finally, there is a place for news reports regarding the organization and a spot for those familiar with the charity to offer reviews.

Petfinder.com Foundation Benefits Local Shelter and Rescue Organizations

Woukdn’t you like to help make all shelter dogs this happy?

If you read this blog on Sundays, you know I always feature a homeless pet from PetFinder’s Shelter Center, in hopes of finding a home by providing publicity for at least one animal a week.  From my point of view, PetFinder provides a very valuable service simply by providing a central repository where people can go to search for adoptable pets no matter where they live.  What I didn’t know is that PetFinder also has a non-profit foundation that provides grants and other support to local shelters and rescue organizations to help them become more sustainable.
