How are dogs euthanized in your state?

davie

Not a topic we like to think about, but we all know that dogs are put down when shelters become over-crowded.  Do you have any idea how your state carries out the euthanasia?  In North Carolina, apparently, they use a gas chamber, which brings to my mind Nazi Germany’s death camps.  Not terribly humane, and apparently, not always effective, as this beautiful little puppy was pulled alive from the shelter’s garbage can.

New Features on Doggies.com

Doggies.com has launched an exciting new feature: a searchable directory where dog-related businesses can post information, pictures, and contact information for FREE.   Each business receives a free web page including text and up to six pictures.  Quick links on each listing lead you to the business’ email and web site if they have one, and to an interactive map so you can easily find the business.  You can search by zip code in categories such as veterinarians, groomers, boarding kennels, dog sitters, and trainers.

If you own a dog-related business, be sure to sign up your business for your free web page now!

A companion feature, community forums, is also newly available.  In this section, you can ask questions and socialize with other dog lovers.  Some forums are specific to a particular breed, while others focus on support after the death of a beloved pet, lost and found dogs, behavior and training, and dog photos.  This feature is also free to join and free to use.

What are you waiting for?  Click over to the directory or community forums today!

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Dog Portraits

Have you ever considered having your dog’s portrait painted?  I had this done several years ago for a friend after her beloved Afghan Hound passed on.  She absolutely loved it and still has it hung proudly in her home.  I received a lovely e-mail today from pet portrait artist Joy Steuerwald.  She is located in the Bay Area of California, but can take your order over the Internet.  All she needs is a few photographs and a bit of information about your dog, as well as a 50% deposit.

Shown at the top of this post was my favorite of the ones she had posted on her website.  I’m going to try to get her to post in our directories, too, but in the meantime, be sure to check out her website

Until next time,

Good day, and good dog!

Tuesday’s Top Ten: Things Dogs Have Surgically Removed

If you read my earlier post on dogs from hell, you know that my dogs have eaten everything in my house.  Similar to the dog in Marley and Me, many dogs eat things they really shouldn’t.  From Veterinary Pet Insurance (as reported by MSNBC), here are the top ten things surgically removed from dogs:

Iraqi dog Ratchet greets his saviour

We posted a few months ago about Ratchet, the dog rescued from a burning pile of rubbish in Iraq by Army Specialist Gwen Beberg.  With the help of about 70,000 people who signed an online petition urging the Army to loosen regulations and allow soldiers to bring home dogs from war zones, Spec. Beberg was able to send the dog home to her parents.  GOOD NEWS!  Beberg has now made it home safely from Iraq as well.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that the Specialist came home on January 18th and was happily reunited with Ratchet at the local VFW hall. You can see the whole story here..
