San-Mar Kennels in South Bend has been ordered to move its animals due to a failed inspection. However, the kennel is appealing the decision, so the fate of these animals is still up in the air.
Either way, these dogs deserve better. #AdoptDontShop
On Monday, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Humane Society of the United States sent a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) urging it to investigate the harmful pet leasing industry for deceiving consumers. The complaint asks the FTC to investigate Wags Lending and associated pet stores for deceptive practices that lead consumers into signing leases for pets they believe they are purchasing. The complaint also asks the FTC to investigate the practices of Monterey Financial Services, which collects lease payments from Wags Lending’s customers. Continue reading Pet Leasing Industry Sued→
If you’ve been a long-time blog follower, you may remember my singing the praises of Chewy.com. Not only are they always a little cheaper for items I buy all the time (like hundreds of dollars worth of food for my animals every month), they are also very caring. You may have seen the donations they give to the shelter organizations featured on Animal Planet, like Planned Pethood Plus (Dr. Jeff).
Since at least 2010, if you wanted to make sure you were buying a dog from a reputable breeder, you could search for the breeder on the USDA’s website, which listed known animal abusers, including puppy mills.
Inexplicably, this information has been removed from the site. Their suggestion is that you instead file a request under the Freedom of Information Act, which could take years before you get a response.
Please join me in asking the Trump administration to restore this information to make it easy to access. Sign the petition.

The Humane Society of the United States announced earlier this month that they had participated in a raid in Adams County, Ohio that resulted in the rescue of more than 160 animals suffering from severe neglect.
The animal hoarder who was keeping these dogs also had many carcasses on the property. The video shows how relieved the dogs were to be leaving, but the scenes are heartbreaking.
We reported several months ago on the dogfighting case in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. More than 30 dogs were seized from three homes by law enforcement officers and Humane Society investigators, while 25 dogs had been seized earlier as part of an investigation into drug trafficking. Much of the US will be experiencing record-breaking cold this week. Please make sure you give some thought to how you will keep your dog warm. Obviously, the best solution is to bring him inside the house, but if that’s not possible, the Humane Society has some other suggestions: Continue reading Protect Your Dog from the Cold→
