The American Kennel Club (AKC®) recently announced that the intelligent, family friendly breed holds tight to the number one spot on the most popular list for the 24th consecutive year, continuing the longest reign as the nation’s top dog in AKC history.

While the Lab holds strong, the Bulldog has quietly crept up the list, landing this year at number four for the first time – its highest ranking in breed history. This gentle breed makes an excellent family companion with a natural tendency to form strong bonds with kids, an easy-to-care-for coat and minimal exercise needs.

If you’re not familiar, designer dogs are those cross-breeds that are specifically bred – primarily to be cute as a button! As opposed to typical dogs whose ancestral tree hasn’t been purebred in a long time, these dogs made by always crossing the same purebred breed to another (consistent) purebred breed. For example, a Puggle is made by crossing a Pug and a Beagle. You can’t cross a Puggle to a Puggle and expect to get a baby Puggle.

That’s right – my favorite time of year is coming up. In the course of the next 3 months, we’ll have three new champions: winners of the Iditarod, the Crufts show from England, and the granddaddy of all dog shows – Westminster! Madison Square Garden – all of New York, really – will be going to the dogs on February 10th and 11th for the 138th Annual Westminster Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show. Here’s the top ten reasons why you’ll want to watch, or better yet, attend the show.
